as i got more comfortable, i use more thumb and less any other fingers... can feed pretty quickly and consistently now, in most positions i am welding in...

See for curved surfaces it makes total sense to me, I also keep it almost perpendicular to the tangent where I'm welding. If you know ahead of time you are going to grind it flush then it's a good idea to prep it to an open but weld. I.E. a gap and also bevel back the parts as mush as you reasonably can.
