Cleaning material

Recently I've used a aluminum oxide flap disk to clean aluminum and stainless steel for tig welding. It did wonders for cleaning and made the aluminum shine and no white residue. I was curious if this was acceptable for professional use or just stick to wire brushing for professional work and flap d...

Where to get supplies

Does anyone have any recommendations of places to go other than a scrap yard to find really cheap scrap metal for metal art like gears, old yard tools, old tools, and other parts.

Re: Greetings

Welcome to the forum. If your powering 300 still runs keep her going. Of you need another one later on then do that. Maybe you'll want to pick up a tig machine to. And there is no such thing as to old to weld especially at only 65.

Is it tungsten?

I came across 8 of what seemed to be 5\32" 2%thoriated tungsten in my dads toolbox. He says he thought they were drill dies from his old machining days, but they match the description. 7" long and have he colored band. Is there a way I can tell without welding with them. The tig welder at ...

Millermatic 211 spool gun

My school has a Millermatic 211, the model before the current 211, and my teacher has assigned me to set up a spoolmatic 100. I set it up with .030" wire and it feeds well until I actually start welding. When I pull the trigger and start the arc the wire just almost stops and is similar to a ve...

Re: Is pulse worth the extra money???

What kind of side jobs are you performing. If you are doing really thin material than you may want to go with the pulse or if you're doing a lot of overhead welding or vertical. If you are doing mostly thicker materials (1/8 and above) than you can probably save your $200. It may be a good investmen...

Project ideas?

I'm looking for small projects, (yard art, small projects for decoration). I have a bad creative mind and can't come up with many good ideas. I'd like some steel, stainless, and regular steel preferably (not together necessarily).

Miller Digital Infinity

Bought a black digital infinity from welders supply for $250. So far after about four hours I am very satisfied. I haven't actually welded yet but I've gone through most everything the helmet has to offer. I'll try everything it has to offer tomorrow. The viewing area is really large. Miller through...

KT industries welding helmet

We got 3 of these helmets a couple of months ago at school and I've done mig, tig, stick, flux core, and torch welding with the helmet and I have to say it somewhat surprised me. The helmets were $70 on sale and farm and fleet. For mig, flux core, and stick it worked fairly well only minor flickerin...

Re: Welding Helmet

From what i saw the helmet is really nice and the gloves are as well. Great first helmet and for about $100 less than the Miller suggested price it's a feat deal especially for a store like that.

Tech School Supplies

Next school year I will be taking a welding class at a local tech school. I currently don't have access to the supplies list and would like to buy stuff when it's on sale. Re: Wood Splitter

The pipe peice has a weight at he top made of a peice of 1" round stock sandwiched between two prices of 1/4" plate. I built it mostly because it was cheap (only had to buy the pipe in my case) and I've seen similar products. It wasn't exactly what I wanted with squareness and overall qual...

Re: Welding Helmet

According to the guy at welders supply the helmets are always that price and that I could come in anytime to buy it so end of the summer when cash is on hand is looking about right for me. He also said that the gloves was mostly an online thing, but he could fix me up with the gloves.

Is it time to buy a new stick welder

At my high school the only stick welders we have are 1960's era Aircos. I've personally had a lot of trouble get good clean arcs. Should I continue to tell my shop teacher to buy a new welder or stick it out. Do you have any recommendations for a AC/DC stick welder that's kind of cheaper( Lincoln or...
