D17.1 1G

I'm practicing for D17.1 1G on 8" X 16 gauge 304 ss coupons. I haven't really welded since 2018 so I have forgotten a ton of info. I have never even attempted aerospace welding until last week. I've been welding these things while trying to follow the instruction on Jody's videos. That is a bit...

Lockheed Martin?

Hi guys, So I'm getting tired of these little b.s. subcontractor gigs that only pay $15 - $20/hr. I want a real job with a real future and real pay that can support a family of four with something left over to play with and retire on. And Lockheed isn't very far from me in Marietta GA. I know they p...

Re: New to stick welding

Stainless requires a lot less heat than other metals. As long as youre not welding thin stainless then you're not gonna run into too many problems. I've tig welded a lot of stainless bakery equipment and can say for certain that 316 rod is the easiest to work with. I believe that it is the only acce...

Re: Weld puddle almost flat, need help !

The rule of thumb with aluminum is 1.1 amps per thousandth thickness. I learned to tig weld on 1/16" wall, square, aluminum tubing. I didnt learn to tig on steel. I just set it on 70 amps and kept practicing. It should take 2 to 3 seconds to get a puddle going and it starts with slow dabbing ti...

One Damn Fine Tig Pedal

I bought my Everlast Powertig 255ext and just got the basic package. I never had any problem with the pedal until a couple of months ago when the micro switch took a shit. Rather than trying to find a replacement part I just upgraded to the best quality pedal that Everlast offers: a 2,000,000 cycles...

The only filler rod that i have ever bought that wasnt stamped is titanium rod. But it had paper stickers on each end of the rod that labeled it.

Re: Tips for welding thin stainless?

A coworker told me that he usually does 6" runs on those little tables. That table frame is the ONLY thing that I haven't warped since I started working there. This stainless crap has me paranoid. Thanks for the replies.

Tips for welding thin stainless?

194 tacks @ 1 tack per inch. Working my way around the table with 1/2" welds spaced 6" apart. Is there any way to make this any easier without warping this schmoz? Frame is 1/8" wall X 1" tubing. Top is 11 gauge. All this aggravation because we didn't have anyone in the shop toda...

Re: Something happened.

What were you welding? That looks like galvanized to me. That stuff cracks, pops and explodes while welding. Blows base metal crap back onto your tungsten. Smokes up your cup with that wonderful, milky whiteness. I just had to weld that crap last night at a bakery in the most awesomely awkward and p...

Re: Another 6010 Question.

No, not typical pay. I think their main guy makes about $22/hr but they can't get any work out of him anymore. I think the guy has a drug problem and I'm gonna be replacing him fully as soon as they've had time to assess my performance. I was told that I did more in three hours than their main guy h...

Re: Another 6010 Question.

Conveyor for a cake factory. My big toes hurt from welding on my knees all day. I can't feed rod with my right hand and didn't realize it until today. That's making this a lot harder than it has to be. Edit: Even at 105amps their aircooled torch sux! I gotta make an outlet adapter so I can use my ow...

Re: Another 6010 Question.

I got started @$12/hr and was told that if all goes well then I'll get boosted to $15/hr after one month. I think my welds look terrible but these guys are extremely pleased. When the owner saw how much I had done and how it looked, he boosted me up to $14/hr. I think my welds look like total shit b...

Re: Another 6010 Question.

I am NOT suggesting welding without a hood, obviously, but you can easily impress the uninformed if they ask you a question while welding, because you can raise your hood to answer them without breaking the arc. This stuns the shit out of the uninitiated. Steve I don't know if I'll ever be that goo...

Re: Another 6010 Question.

For 1/8" 5p+ in a 1/8" gap, I run 105A. Yes, that's outside the suggested range by a little bit. For "bury-rod", it puts the root reinforcement where you want it, so long as you keep the rod 90* to the work, and with a good fit I don't need a hood to weld it once I'm started. St...

Re: Another 6010 Question.

I had tried this twice, a couple of years ago, with 6011 and didn't get it out the back side on either try. This hasn't been an issue this go round. I had been getting a bit of undercut on the back side, at the top of the root, and was wondering if the mill scale had something to do with it. I was m...
