Re: Newb Help Needed

i did tig welding stick welding and oxy-acetylene welding in highschool, one thing i remember distinctly was that with oxy-acet and stick welding they were very firm in saying they didn't want us to ever weld a closed container. not sure if this was because of explosive dangers or what just remembe...

Yeah this is what I'm thinking. I was just wondering if there was some way to get around that.

Newb Help Needed

I’m having a problem. I’ve been practicing my aluminum TIG welding by making cubes out of aluminum sheet For the second time now I can’t seem to be able to fill the very last spot. I mean the last spot that would seal the cube up. I keep getting black soot trying to fill the very last spot, like the...

Re: TIG cast Aluminum

I tried out my new aluminum carbide bit. Huge difference, just a light grinding of the top surface exposing fresh material. Much less crap in the puddle, still not perfect, but way way better.

Re: TIG cast Aluminum

a few tips for cleaning: get an aluminum-specific carbide burr. they have less flutes so you don't need to lube them to keep them from loading. also, get a new stainless wire brush, use it often. don't use any abrasive cutting/grinding wheels/discs unless you really, really have to and always file ...

Re: TIG cast Aluminum

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. What I had to do was wire brush make a cleaning pass with torch no filler to boil up crap and clean again. Finally added filler and ground the bead down and repeat till I get a clean base its a pain sometimes but it can be done. Yeah, it's bugging the hell out of me because I've ...

TIG cast Aluminum

I’m having a devil of a time trying to TIG weld some cast aluminum. I’m a hobby welder, by no means a pro. Specifically what I’m trying to weld is a motorcycle swingarm. I bought a junk one so I could practice before I tried anything that counts. Exactly what is happening is the welds are very porou...

Cracking Steel

Ok this is a bit of a newb question. When I weld 1/4" and up steel as it cools it sometimes cracks along the weld. What causes this and how can I prevent it? TIG welding if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Snap on Hood

I've bought a lot of Snap on tools over the years. The very best tools without question. However far too many times I've felt ripped off weeks after the purchase. I don't feel like that when I buy something from Sears or Northern tools. I don't go near the Snap on truck anymore for that reason.

Back From Lincoln Electic TIG School

I took their one week TIG welding class. Good class, the instructors were great. You have access to virtually unlimited materials and supplies. I even got a small tour of the factory. I was blown away to find out they make everything in house. They actually make the mufflers on the engine driven wel...

Re: Argon

well, it can be broken down into math. Depending on your flowrates, it can last anywhere from 4- 8 hours of straight arc on time. Say, 20cfh, and it will last for 4 solid hours of uninterrupted welding. Since the duty cycle of the welder wouldn't allow that anyway, it is kind of a useless figure. M...

Argon

How long should an 80 CF tank of Argon last? I realize this is difficult to answer, but I need some kind of benchmark. How long a tank that size lasts for other poeple. I'm going through a tank about every 5 weeks. I only use my welder(Invertech 205) on the weekends. But those days it will get a lot...
