Re: A little help troubleshooting a problem

Belated follow up on this problem. I was sure this problem was related to my Tig200 welder. Because it never did it with my old scratch start setup and it did it with both my Jackson autodarkening helmet and a cheapy Harbor freight autodarkening helmet. I gave the Jackson a new battery and there was...

Re: A little help troubleshooting a problem

I use an autodarkening helmet. I have two and it happens with both helmets. When the flare happens I can see bright yellow light from my peripheral vision from under my chin. ie the light is real not a failure of the helmet. The closest thing I have experienced is gas welding Aluminum with flux and ...

A little help troubleshooting a problem

While welding I get an intermittent really bright yellow flare of light. It is so bright it swamps the lens and I can't see a thing. The frequency of occurrence seems to be increasing. The weld puddle looks good at least as good as I ever do. I have a Lincoln Tig 200 welder. I installed Jody's stubb...

Cast Iron Repair Project

I'm looking for advice on how to tackle this repair. I have an Enco corner notcher. (1989 vintage made in Taiwan) The top of the cutter has two ears with a 19 mm hole bored thru. One of the ears has broken off completely. It broke on the diameter of the hole and right through the set screw tapped ho...

Re: Jet JMD-18 Mill/Drill

If you need to find an existing hole, you chuck a dial test indicator in the Jacobs chuck. Move the tables until the needle on the indicator doesn't move when you spin the chuck. (By hand only!)

Re: Magnetic stainless. how to avoid

The microstructure of annealed 300 series stainless is Austenitic. This is non magnetic.

Cold rolling Stainless forms some amount of Martensite. This microstructure is magnetic.

Heating and quenching is another way of forming Martensite. There can be a bit of that going on in a weld puddle.

And round looks a heckuva lot better in a roll cage than square or rectangle.

There is only one way to appease the gremlins.

You have to admit you are a complete doofus and have lost your (fill in the blank). Only by proclaiming out loud that you are an idiot for losing some item, will the object then reappear.

Try it.

Gotta be in parallel. Series would raise the voltage with the same current.
Parallel would be same voltage and added current.

Re: Welding a trailer axle stub to tube.

Both.

I drilled holes through the tube and did plug welds
Then I welded around the end of the tube.

I used a total of 8 plug welds on each end.

Re: Bicycle crank repair

Left side crank will have a left handed thread. It will be an odd combo of diameter and thread. Don't start or price the job until you have the tap in hand. I don't want to make a filler recommendation because I don't know the alloy but for sure that part is heat treated up to T6 temper. You will ne...

Re: 304 Stainless square tube

One thing about Stainless Steel. It work hardens like a sombich. Low speed and good pressure with lube is the ticket. If the teeth skate on the surface it will harden up . Same goes for a drill bit. If you stop pushing and lose the chip, you will burn the bit up trying to get through the hardened la...

Bed frames are not mild steel. I do not know the exact alloy or carbon content but they are MUUUUCH harder than run of the mill hot rolled angle iron. Perhaps this explains your experience.

Re: Question for the machinists in the group

I would make some spacers to fit between the two bearings. Use 5/8 od 1/16 wall tubing. Open the id so the bolt fits thru. Press the bearings in with the spacer between the inner rings. Now you can install the 1/2 inch bolt and tighten the daylights out of it and it won't put any undue stress on the...

Re: Question for the machinists in the group

.010 interference will ruin a ball bearing in short order. There are lots of bearing catalogs that specify the exact interference but 0.001 inch should work. You want a press fit on the ring of the bearing that is rotating, and clearance on the non rotating. Turn it a thou or two under size and then...

Not the New York, It had 5 twin turrets, also did not have cage masts during WWII. North Carolina was not present at Pearl Harbor during the attack. There were two classes of battleships that were nearly Identical. The California and Tennessee had 4 triple turrets with 14 inch guns Colorado, West Va...

Re: Spot welding aluminum with TIG

Drill a hole in the floor, clamp the parts together and fill the hole with weld. It is called a rosette weld and it will look similar to a spot weld and will be as strong or stronger. I used this technique while replacing rusted panels on a 69 Mustang.

I just got a Lincoln Tig 200. Placed it on top of my welding table to try things out. Clamped a piece in the vise and it welded great. Then I got a piece of plate and lay it down flat. Spitting, popping and all kinda mess. WTF??!!! Turns out the cooling fan from the unit was blowing my shielding gas...

Re: Aluminium band saw - carry on regardless?

I have cut Aluminum with a Carbide wood blade in my worm drive circular saw. Noisy as all get out but a nice cut and no dangerous grabbing.
Aluminum feeds are not far away from wood, so I say if it works keep doing it.
