Re: Cover pass

Think the op was a stick weld. Isn't that last pic a tig? Nice cover though. I couldn't really tell since it was cleaned with a wire wheel. I should have been able to, kind of tired. Same principles though. I'm trying to find a stick picture I've done but having trouble uploading it. edit: Here it ...

Oh. That changes the dynamic quite a bit then. You could always cut it into thinner sections on a band saw to make it last longer rather than have one giant chunk. The idea was for them to donate the material in order to train students specifically to repair cracks for them. That's about all they u...

Re: Small stainless

I've been doing a lot of 3-4 inch schedule 10 lately and I usually just turn my heat down as far as I can on my cap after waiting 20 minutes or so. I usually prep another piece in the interim and then know the cap out at about 70 amps. What position are we talking about? *edit* Here's some 3 inch sc...

Not bad BigD. We were going to to get some titanium donated to the school by a local business but we still don't have a 300 amp torch and we were concerned about ventilation. So: How many amps did you use? Did you feel sick afterwards breathing it in? Why would you need a 300a torch? Most people we...

Re: Cover pass

The only thing that immediately comes to mind is to get your heat down as much as possible to avoid that undercut. Pause where your puddle is about 1/16 over the top line, add a generous amount of filler, and swivel down quickly with the understanding that the middle and bottom will take care of the...

I know some wont like this but check it out. https://youtu.be/WNt-bL_-fJY Mr. Tig is the Mr. Rodgers of the welding world. The guy in this video makes a monkey out of MT. Jody always shows his welds when he is done...I wonder why MT doesn't...hmmm Hey Fred Rogers is awesome. Mr. Tig, not so much.

Re: Getting it too hot???

Second what others have said. I'd also add that walking the cup is a light touch. If it's something that you're not used to, you might have a tendency to grab tight and walk it super hard which isn't good for the weld or the torch. A good way to learn is to take a piece of metal or something and dra...

Not bad Rupes. I like how you made it flush like a pipe weld. I'll probably do the same thing. I think I might give this a shot next week. I was too busy catching up on other stuff this one.

Re: Cutting Stainles sheet

If you have a high purity marker, I cut a lot of stainless with a cutting disc on an angle grinder or metabo. You can see the mark on stainless good, and as long as you score it first, the cuts come out pretty decent. A lot of pipe is cut that way in the field. Of course a good portable band saw wor...

I just realized that I'm wearing the viking in my avatar picture  You make some good points about needing the clarity for lower amp stuff but be careful. Even the thin stuff has hexavalent cromium if its stainless. Used my new Jackson lens all day to day for the first time and I really loved it...

Depends. If the 'productivity' side of things is something that only comes up now and then and you don't need to weld super thin stuff, you might get away with Tig and Stick? Kym Basically what I was trying to say but you did so much more eloquently. Why not do the better processes if you aren't in...

Not to rain on anyone's parade but I thought I'd share my experience with the viking as well. I recently got one and at first I was blown away by the clarity but that was something that I came to regret not soon afterward. I do weld all day, and the clarity, even with increasing the shade up to 11 a...

Re: New to forum: New welder advice, multi-process or not?

Just remember that any machine that can stick weld can also do scratch start TIG. All you need is an air cooled torch with manual gas and an argon tank with a good regulator. You can get an old rectifier machine very cheap and that will give you the stick and tig processes, which I think are far sup...

What kind of certs do you have? Do they cover several different processes? Sometimes it's useful to get a 6G pipe cert or something like that because then you're qualified for all positions for pipe and plate. There's several places in my area that will give a pipe welder a chance because of the hig...

Interesting topic. SavePhace sells hoods with custom paint by professional artists. I'd like to hear the safety man's take on these, since it's both "paint" and "OEM". Acrylic enamel, urethane, and epoxy paints that can be made to stick to a plastic hood have similar flash point...
