Re: New Tig Hood questions

You know there are businesses that rent out camera lens, maybe someone should start a welding hood rental business, that way you can try before you buy  That would be nice. :D But I am positive the Speedglas will be better than my dead Miller Elite. But the Miller did last over 8 years. 8-)

Re: New Tig Hood questions

Well, after about a week of watching videos and reading reviews, my gut told me to go with my first choice. So I just ordered the Speedglas 9100xxi along with a few cheater lenses and a FREE BONUS STARTER KIT worth $31.00 value. I was down to the Speedglas, the Viking 3350, and the Miller Digital In...

Re: New Tig Hood questions

Any reason not to buy this one other than the 1-1-1-2 rating?? I kind of like it. :)

Re: New Tig Hood questions

Hi ya'll. When I upgraded to a Miller 252 welder, I also bought the Miller Digital Infinity Series (Stars & Stripes). I negotiated a very good deal on both and love the helmet. Keeping in mind I don't use it full time, the times I do use it, I LIKE IT VERY MUCH! The head gear has an additional ...

Re: New Tig Hood questions

I have the Lincoln Viking 3350 with 2.0 cheaters and wearing prescription bi- focal and I still have no depth perception. (the joys of getting old) Everything is very sharp though. It's a good helmet best I've had. I love the large lens. I wear readers so I need cheaters. :D Getting older myself. H...

Re: New Tig Hood questions

The more I research the more I wait to buy a new hood. I am even thinking about the Viking 3350 now. What, you got hood envy?  Well I guess so. ;) It seems the 1-1-1-1 vs the 1-1-1-2 issues and the 3 vs 4 sensors and the battery only vs battery = solar and the reviews can be time c...

Re: New Tig Hood questions

I have the Optrel e684 and like it, never used the Speedglas but many have wrote good reviews. Optrel has the new Crystal 2.0 but I think it's only claim is the 2.0 light shade for grinding, which I don't do with a welding hood on Thanks Richard. I am still thinking the Speedglas 9100XXi and will l...

New Tig Hood questions

My Miller Elite may be on it's last legs so I may have to buy a new hood. I have been looking at the Speedglas 9100xxi but as always I have found some issues with the ADF that *some* people have reported where it goes into dark mode and you have to cycle it to get it back to where you had it. I have...

Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair

I almost had to do a cast repair with oxy fuel brazing and go out in a limb and try it on a vise base but some dumbly left the oxygen on one night and it all leaked out(little bastard  ) but while we are talking about it, got any tips or suggestions for oxy fuel brazing cast? I think this is ...

Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair

Brazing works because the torch flame heats the material (and surrounding piece) at a proper rate to get up to temp for the flux coated brazing rod (or you can buy bare and dip it into some good flux). You just have to cook the crap out of the properly prepared joint without melting the base metal a...

Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair

Nice save! I've only done the one cast iron job so far (alum bronze) but I've done several cast aluminum ones that were dirty from years of use - so I feel your frustration on this one :) Yeah this was a royal nightmare. I have had alot of success with brazing but this piece just wasn't having it. ...

My dad was a crew chief on the bombers back then. He said the crew chief always had to go fly with the pilot after a repair. I guess that alone would make someone a better mechanic. :D

Re: Swivel Head Torch HTP 221 Question

I tighten up the button itself as much as I can with the swivel head about 15-20° away from where it needs to be. Then I hold the button, and tighten the swivel head just a smidge more and it ends up landing "in place'. For me, this ends up giving the swivel head sufficient "tightness&quo...

Try AL without filler once. ;) Don't worry-tacks without filler I have done a few times and found out real quick why not to. Got an inch into a butt joint and I heard a pop and about half way down it turned into a lap joint. T-joint on aluminum I wouldn't do but if it wasn't critical outside corner...
