Re: Chinese MIG Wire

Thanks. I didn't build the tines. They were taken from an existing set that was designed really badly. I cut them up and welded them onto a frame I built, and I added the plates for a quick-attach adaptor. The plates were cut out of some scrap from an old quick-attach mount plate.

Chinese MIG Wire

I am on my second big roll of Harbor Freight MIG wire, and I generally use a Harbor Freight Titanium welder, even though I have a Lincoln. The wire has run fine for me, and I made two projects that have to take a lot of stress: a modified tractor bucket (changed to quick-attach) and a tractor debris...

What Does "C25" Mean?

Here's a weird question. When I buy C25, is it 25% CO2 by mass, volume, or what?

Re: New Tractor Fork Made by Dubious Welder

Just to be clear, I'm not worried about the tines bending. I think the FEL would bend before I pulled that off. I thought adding some crossmembers might take some strain off the welds holding the tines on the frame. I have confidence in the tubing. It's my welds that concern me. But maybe you unders...

New Tractor Fork Made by Dubious Welder

I had 4 chain-on debris tines for my tractor's bucket. Then I converted the FEL and bucket to quick-attach, and that meant I could no longer attach the tines. They were very useful, but they were impossible to anchor down, so they moved around. They were also slowly bending the bucket. They were way...

Re: Making a Cart from A US General Box

Thanks, everybody. The casters are original. They're fine, but some day I might put different wheels in them because of the likelihood of running over bits of metal. I am considering putting a sheet of 3/4" plywood on top of the red box to distribute the weight of the heavy American machines. T...

Re: Making a Cart from A US General Box

I have finished the new welding cart. It's a lot more stable than the old one, and it turns in a smaller area. I have to get some screws to attach the handle, but that's about all that's left to do. Some day I may get better wheels for it. I put spray Herculiner on it. Looks somewhat nicer than othe...

Re: Bondo Instead of Excessive Filler?

The crazy trailer regulations sound a lot like China, where it's illegal to wash your own car or modify it!

Obviously, the rules are excessive. We don't have them here, and we are not experiencing an epidemic of trailer-related deaths.

Re: Bondo Instead of Excessive Filler?

In case anyone is interested, I tried Bondo today, and it's impossible to use. It starts out too runny to put in place, and then in a few minutes it turns into something like a cold Sugar Daddy mixed with sawdust. Then it turns into grainy cement. The thing that worked best for me was a JB Weld Stee...

Bondo Instead of Excessive Filler?

I saw some dude on Youtube putting caulk on ugly welds, and I thought it was genius, apart from using a product that would eventually crack and fall off. I have started using epoxy putty to cover welds and make projects look cool. Wonder if anyone else here does this. I just bought a big ol' can of ...

Spool Gun on Cast Aluminum?

While I was telling myself I was saving money by removing and replacing my tractor's steering cylinder, I managed to make a tiny hole in the engine's front cover. It's in a location where you pretty much have to split the tractor to remove and replace it, and getting a TIG torch and filler in there ...

Can't recall whether I posted this elsewhere.

I ended up using MIG with 0.035" solid wire, and it looks good. Lots of passes.

I should really get up to speed with stick.

Re: Portable Reel for 100' 3/8" Air Hose?

I should have come back and shown everyone what I got.

I picked up a Harbor Freight reel for $25 and screwed it to a board that has rubber feet on the bottom. Painted the board with Rust-Oleum hammer finish paint. It will work perfectly, and it's not heavy. Good enough.

Re: Making a Cart from A US General Box

I have to make another change, so I'm adding it here to prevent other people from making mistakes. My green cart has 120-cubic-foot tanks, so they're tall. I put the upper restraint about 33-1/2" from the shelf the tanks sit on. This is fine for big tanks, but if the web is giving me good infor...

What Gases Should I Buy for MIG?

I'm slapping a new cart together for a Lincoln PowerMIG 180C, and I have to configure the tank restraint. I already have a cart with two 120's on it; argon and C25. I feel like I should get an 80 for the new cart. I stupidly sold my old 80-gallon C25 tank, so I have no way to measure an 80 to see ho...

Re: Making a Cart from A US General Box

I want to follow up on this. The cart is fantastic. No two ways about it. It makes open carts look obsolete and poorly designed, which I guess they are. It's a blast to use. I didn't even have to put cable hooks on it, because all the wires and things drape over the bottles. Hooks would make it wors...

Re: Tacking Stainless Nuts to Carbon Steel Plate?

Thanks for the help.

I do plan to paint the platform. I used a grinder, electrolysis, and my kitchen dishwasher to get it reasonably clean and free of rust, and I'm planning to prime over the existing paint and bare spots and cover it with Herculiner.

Tacking Stainless Nuts to Carbon Steel Plate?

With the help of this forum, I turned my tractor bucket into an SSQA attachment. Sadly, while doing this, I noticed a huge leak coming from the steering, so I am removing the steering cylinder for repair. Of course, Kubota provided really bad instructions in the workshop manual and made a relatively...

Here is what I have. I'm pretty happy with it. I am not a real fabricator, but I got this done well enough to do the job, and to most people, it will look like I hired somebody. Actually, given the way a lot of professionals weld, maybe it already looks like I hired somebody. There are a lot of ugly...

Thanks for writing all that. I may print it out and take it with me.

You are right about sparks. Yesterday, I was wearing boots that fit tightly around my ankles, and a spark hit me on the top of my foot somehow.
