Re: Neck pains

Position welding will often stress your body in funny angles that may leave you sore from time to time. Ain't it the truth, and not just for welding. Recently my daughter commented about an early photo of my wife and I where I was seated and she stood behind. My daughter suggested that it should ha...

I always lube up my aches and pains with 90 proof alcohol...works wonders. People would be suprised how something as light as a welding helmet can cause pain when you wear it all day. Not really much advice from me other than when I am hurting, I dive into whatever I am doing and try to forge...

Re: Argon gas loss/depletion

Yup, I loose my pressure after closing the valve in a couple of hours, if you want an idea of quantity, turn it on, do your thing, turn the valve off and then unhook the hose from your welder while its pressurized, as you unscrew it you will hear the hissing and if you manage to get it all the way o...

Re: Cutting and notching, angles and all that. Need some hel

Yeah, I am sure there is an easy way to do it with the right gear, I have on the site, a plasma cutter, a grinder and a chop saw. Then 3 different welders, 2 stick and 1 MIG.

So far its been done with an angle grinder and its better than nothing but its a lot of grinding.

Neck pains

Hello welders, I woke up this morning with a narly pain in my neck. if I try to do a chin tuck where I pull my head straight backwards, it hurts like crazy. I was working till 11:30 PM last night, welding a tire rack together, I think I worked for 2 or 3 hours with my 2 pnd hood on only taking it of...

Cutting and notching, angles and all that. Need some help

Hey Guys, I am working on a site right now with the job of building a tire rack. I have built a lot of things but normally, I build out of square tubing and not pipe. In this case, its pipe (woo) which I am not very good at figuring out angles and notching and all that fine stuff. If you look at the...

Re: Tying it in and welding in confined angles

Okay, I messed up on which rod I used, I have both on the shelf but I used 6010, not 6013. You only use 6010 rods for a gapped/open root or whats the idea with that? I thought it was standard for every pipe weld to have its root run in 6010 open or not. Please do explain, I am trying to learn from m...

Tying it in and welding in confined angles

Hello hello, I did a pipe weld for a co worker yesterday, I have not done water pressure piping before but figured I would give it a shot. It was an 1 1/2" to 2" or something like that. It was technically a socket weld, ran 6013 root in 3/32" and my hot and cap were 7018 with an 1/8&q...

Re: Thin Sheetmetal to Thick welding

TIG it, that's what I do. Just run it hot and kind of "flow" the thicker stuff over the thinner stuff, you wan't to get your thick stuff nice and molten then just move the torch over the light stuff and kill the heat, its done fast but it works great.

Re: Welding/braising/fabrication advice

Piece of cake. Just have the 3 pieces fabbed and bent, then weld them. Looks like the 2 side panels are stich welded to the shelf from the bottom. the shelf has both sides bent down to keep the heat marks off the surface that's difficult to refinish. stitch it and then refinish the 2 sides after wel...

Well, It's top-rated at 1/1/1/1 in clarity and the other specs. It's Swiss made too, I believe, not that Asian is necessarily inferior. $322, with no shipping cost and no extortion paid to lazy State bureaucrats is the best price I find, currently. I think you will have a hard time finding a helmet...

Zank, I saw your pictures on those bikes, stainless welds i believe, nice colours super nice beads. How do you get that? I don't normally go asking for help as I don't like to display incompetence but I saw all the welds in the "What i welded today" thread and when I saw yours I said, you ...

Re: Advice on dime stacking

Makes sense, I think Oscar got my problem right, I tend to have trouble figuring out just when to add and how much, I normally add less and move faster as I don't wan't blob welds, Its easier to add afterwards than to remove so I think that's where I need to practice. Re: Advice on dime stacking

Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it :) Barely had any time to practice, just kind of picked it up where I work as it was needed. I pretty oversee, maintain and repair all of our equipment in the kitchen, they cook for 2500 people every day, 7 days a week so everything in there gets beat up a lot. Event...

Re: Advice on dime stacking

thanks for the feedback, have yet to have a weld fail in service. Just finished welding a pipe coupling on for a piece of pipe for one of our generators, confined angle so part of it don't look too good but I will post pictures after. I use a variety depending on the alloy, I keep 4043, 5356 and 494...

Re: Advice on dime stacking

Thank you,

What makes those welds look like that? I tried getting into the technical aspect of it all but I think its just a matter of method, I don't know if its depending on how hot the piece is or what but I would like to be able to do it every time.

Yup, been there done that. I stopped using below #8 cups, I did an aluminum floor in a walk in fridge, I was there for about 10 hours in the day and I broke..... 4-6 cups I think. all of them had that tapered end. I would weld and weld and weld, cups glowing red hot, I was welding at 140 amps I thin...

Wow, I guess I need a bigger bottle, I fabricate all kinds of stuff as well as repair stuff but I just keep 2 bottles of 125 C.F and when one is down, I get it swapped.

Maybe I should get bigger ones....

Re: TIG welding Schd 40 stainless pipe

I guess that's true. But I do prefer not going back and fixing someone else screw-up. I was actually led onto this site by someone from Miller. I was needing some formal natural gas pipe welding done, since I am not certed I said I don't want to do it and so the guy told me about a local guy, the lo...
