Re: Decorative railing job

$75 an hour is pretty cheap! I heard the place I work charges somewhere in the vacinity of $200 an hour. That what I used as a guide but I would have definitely went with a $75 rate. $200 sounds high to me as well. I'm in Central California and $90 to $100 is the going rate for an independent certi...

Re: Tig Finger

The grey days of winter kill me, when I'm done with work I just want to hang out with Jim all evening. When I'm drinkin' good I go through a 1.75 for the week and another 1.75 for the weekend, and am never sloppy and get up for work just fine the next day. I never 4:20, only booze. And, for me to qu...

Re: In a pickle welding for money or not?

Have you worked as a welder in the past? Does it matter if you are / were a "trained professional" ?

This is just one of the many reasons I dislike insurance companies, they have so many little loopholes and special clauses to get themselves out of any responsibility.

Re: E71T-14 spec question

I've used NR-152 and in my opinion it is only good for thin sheet metal. Very very soft arc, very little build up.
For what you are doing a 0.035 NR-211 would work just fine. All position, any direction, even left handed with a mirror, and it welds better over zinc than on clean bare steel.

Re: In a pickle welding for money or not?

Call it a hobby shop since it's all art stuff, advertise by word of mouth only, accept cash only and give no traceable receipts, ZERO signage, keep above reasonable safety equipment, and run with it. What they don't know won't hurt them or you. Only if something goes wrong then the burden is on them...

I put the thumb wheel on as soon as I got to the shop this morning, things are going much better.
I'll post a picture of this little monstrosity tonight when I have a network to download a picture to.

I'm typically not a whiner, but yesterday just sucked.

Holy Cow !! This thread took a left hand turn.

Today I was at about 1/2 speed as far as production goes. If it's not better tomorrow morning I'm switching back over to a thumb wheel. As well, standing on one foot all day is beginning to hurt.

Jody, and no, not small hands, 9" spread and typical for us meaty fingers. It's getting a little better, lots of "new" things for me today. New machine, Dynasty 280 DX, was Syncro 250. 2% Lanth tungsten, was pure. Foot pedal, I've used a thumb wheel for the past 12 years. This job can...

I just got my first Tig finger. How do you guys keep it on? Both the single and double keep sliding off with a little movement.
I'm about to try the stapler if I can't figure it out soon.

Re: After it's welded....

If it must be ground, thick or jumbo flap disc is the only way to go. 40 grit is all I usually use, lighten up on the pressure to buff out the scratches. Also, unlike a hard wheel, keep it as flat as you can to make use of the entire pad and not just the outer corner.

Re: Plasma cutting settings

It is dependent on your material thickness and travel speed. On my CNC table I can cut 1/4" at 55 amps and 50 in/min or at 40 amps and 80 in/min. If you are cutting by hand, how fast can you move the torch smoothly? Just like with a OA torch, erratic movement interrupts the cut. Also, tip life ...

Syncrowave 250.
Started my business with it. I still use it 16 years later with not one problem other than the operator, but that will change as soon as I get the new Dynasty 280 DX hooked up on a cart.

I once had gotten the gas line pinched between the bottle and the bottle rack. When you initiated the gas flow you would get the little puff sound and feel the gas flow but then it petered out to so little flow it was worth nothing. It took me a while to figure it out but after moving the gas hose e...

Re: Stainless steel dryer drum repair?

The owner of a machine shop I do work for also owns a hand full of laundromats. He has brought me 3 commercial dryer drums to repair. Your mileage may vary as I do not know what is broken on your drum, my my success rate is only 50% with those. 1 fixed, 1 trashed, 1 good for a back up. The material ...
