Re: Where to weld a mitered/coped joint...

[quote="Coldman"]I’d weld them both sides that way you still have plenty of joint strength after grinding the visible side flat. I feel kind of silly, but in my head it seemed like welding one side would be enough, and the finished side would stay as a tight fitted joint in appearance. It’...

Where to weld a mitered/coped joint...

Good morning all. It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything, or welded anything to be honest, but I knew just where to come when I needed some advice. I’m helping a coworker build some 4’x10’ frames out of 3/16” mild steel angle, and the top of the frame we mitered. The bottom of the closed part o...

Re: First Project - Welding Cart

Awesome cart! I bought one alongside of my MIG as I didn't know how to weld yet. As I start to accumulate other gear, I see myself building a larger one. Yours looks very well done! Thanks! I was a bit surprised myself, but I just took my time and made sure it was square etc, re-welded some areas I...

Re: If you're someone who prays,

Keep our friend, Jeff (exnailpounder) in your prayers. He's suffered a personal tragedy I'm not at liberty to discuss, and he can use all the positive vibes we can send his way. Steve Sorry to hear about Jeff. I have not been around here long enough to know him from my own experience and interactio...

Re: total newb question

WeldItUp - Thanks. I use the spray on every weld and on the tip also and it works. I have watched videos of people using spray and they usually pour on a puddle! All you need is a mist to dampen the immediate area and virtually no BB's. A quick hit with a wire wheel in a high speed drill and clean....

Re: total newb question

WeldItUp --Good point about mig being a problem without a controled environment. Another point is with Flux Core and the right wire ,settings and practice you can easily weld all positions, mig not so much. Flux core also has greater penetration so the same welder on Flux Core can weld much thicker ...

Re: total newb question

Just so I get this right which type of mig welding doesn't use a gas? Also which would be the best to start with of the 2 mig types for a total newb to welding? Welcome! I'm very new here too, but I will add that one consideration for gas vs no gas is where you will be welding. Solid wire welding w...

Re: Just Thank You!

Hey we are all learning. That's just the way welding is. The only time that you really aren't learning is if you are a basically a human robot doing the same thing day after day which still has things to be learned. I myself am nowhere near a ton of these guys here. I may have started welding 5 yea...

Just Thank You!

Brian, Nick is just expressing one habit you will acquire, like it or not, as you become skilled at welding. You will find yourself criticizing every weld you encounter, such as on the handrail at your stairwell at work, or on the merry-go-round your kids play on. Once you understand what a proper ...

Re: Just Thank You!

Welcome to the club of universal weld inspectors. I have gone to parks and decided what to do based on the look of the welds. And thank you for becoming a welder. Always nice to have more people learning. Just expressing a legitimate appreciation for something I've taken for granted for a long time...

Just Thank You!

So I started my welding journey (mid life crisis attempt) as a 40 year old, 20-year veteran professional firefighter and paramedic, and I just want to say THANK YOU to all of you who weld in any form or fashion for your profession and livelihood. It's funny how a little insight and new experience ca...

Re: First welds - welding cart

Very nice result! I like the pneumatic tires, to roll over damn near anything in a typical shop floor (cords, air hoses, random dropped nuts and bolts, etc.) Steve Thanks Steve! I debated back and forth on pneumatic vs solid, but I can say they roll over bumps and cords like a dream so far. They ar...

Re: First welds - welding cart

After some love and much needed attention to detail, a little more refresher from Jody's videos, grinding and redo of some welds, leveling and polishing, my project is almost done!
