Re: Titanium welding

My first thoughts are you 100% sure the exhaust is Ti? Is it from a reputable sorce. The second would be is there any type of coating on the exhaust? How did you prep the exhaust?

Practical machinist can be good. But I have seen some trolling besides the other just gruffness.

Re: Looking at new mills.....

Oh I get that. But I think you would find that getting anything smaller than the Grizzly G0729 would not really be much of a upgrade form what you have. It would be a 140 Mig in welder terms. The Grizzly G0729 would be more Lincoln MP210 or Millermatic 215 The Precision Matthews PM835 would be one o...

Re: Looking at new mills.....

Sorry for the first short reply. Was on my tablet and when I went to my laptop to look something up I found that the last windows update had blue screened it. My schooling is as a machinist. Working as more of a millwright. The standard that is used to gauge from is the Bridgeport. There are many ot...

Re: Looking at new mills.....

That PM 835 looks nice. As for upgrades I would look at the DRO and power feed on the X. You could save a couple hundred buying these on eBay and fitting them yourself but I would just order it.

Avoid the bench top mill/drill machines. They are not any better than what you have.

Re: Which 120v flux core welder to get?

If you are going to have a electrician install a new outlet why are you limiting yourself to 120V. Have them run a 220V. If you are really stuck on 120V the closest thing to your budget I can think of is Northern tool and Eastwood both offer a knock off of the ESAB 141i fabricator for $400-500. It's...

Build Mad Max cars. Motivational signs like. When in danger or in doubt run in circles scream and shout. Seriously I have heard from friends and family in healthcare that people are stealing bottles of hand sanitizer. So some type of SS bracket that can be screwed or double sided taped down with a s...

Welders in that part of the world come in two types. The very competent and the very incompetent. Hoping to get a guy back that did some good work before. But with the other option being the possibility of worse then what most here do after a bottle of Jack. I may have to do it myself. Threaded stee...

Re: Welding small pipe

first thing is to go find their procedure for it. There is no procedure. Not sure they know what a procedure is. Gap close enough so 3/32" wire does not fall through. Then laywire 80amps, walk smartly over the wire. Then cap with 1/16" 70amps. Do yourself a favour and throw your s2 wire a...

Welding small pipe

Might get suckered into a project that is a little out of my comfort zone. Will have to weld steel pipe in 1/2-1" range. This is for things like air lines. The fittings are beveled not socket. If you had to do this what would be your plan?

There are a number of these type tools and the consensus looks to be safe your money they are over priced for what they do. But are they a good option. As sschefer said building one is not that hard.

So sounds like this is mostly a case of the keyboard experts watching one to many pipeline videos on YouTube and thinking if that is what they use then that is what they must use.

6010 vs. 6011

So I have been watching and reading a lot of welder reviews. Seems that the first thing that everyone is concerned about is will it run 6010. This is usually fallowed by the advice to just run 6011 if you're machine will not run 6010. Is there any major advantage to 6010 over 6011? Not going to be d...

Are you welding in the same area of your shop when tig welding? Are you getting light in the back of your hood? That will make your weld look dark.

Re: Stressed welds

I used straight Flux Core for years with no problems. Tried hard wire mig on some various test welds and then cut and etched. Quite an eye opener how a pretty looking weld can be just laying on top. Pretty crappy quality control wherever that machine was made. Hope they don't build trailer hitches ...

Also a idea of the type of work you plan on doing would be helpful.

Can't remember if they where on Jody's or JD's youtube but about a yearago they had some talks about the basics for starting out.

Welding mild steel bar into 52100 tube.

So I have to weld mild steel bars into the ends of a bunch of 52100 tubes. Have turned up some info on the internet. Recommendation seems to be 400-450F preheat weld with 7018 peen the hell out of it then a slow cool. Anyone have any other info to add?

3/16 really isn't that small of a drill to hand bomb. If you're having problems the drills could be bad, is the steel really mild steel are you trying to drill a flame cut edge? Or rigidity. I am thinking maybe rigidity as you mentioned long chips. Long chips are great on a machine. Good sign you ar...

Buzzing in a solenoid is not normally a good sign. Don't think the solenoid is anything special. Should be able to get something that will work from any local industrial supply.

Re: Help with picking the right welder for my shop.

So in looking at the options. It seems that I always end up focusing on the machines Tig function. So I am thinking that I should be looking at getting the AC/DC Tig machine sooner than I thought and not worrying about Tig in the other machine. So I am currently looking at Mig, Mig/stick and <$1000 ...
