Is uphill or downhill root better?

Basically the title, I was initially taught uphill 6010 root in school, and when I started working I was immediately told to go downhill because of the speed and it is easier. Now that I'm with the union I was informed today that they don't allow downhill on x-ray jobs, so I figured I'd look online ...

Need printable lateral layout sheets

I'm not looking for anything to print off and lay directly on the pipe- looking for sheets that explain how to layout and make a paper template for 45 and 90 laterals. The blue book is good at showing how to layout laterals onto the pipe, but I worked with a fitter who had a binder full of every lat...

Good place to buy welding hood quick pins?

I bought what I thought was the entire kit for my hardhat and welding hood, but I only got the part that attaches to the hard hat. This is after waiting 6 weeks, a long discussion through email and calling their Indian support line (it was great). It ended with me getting put on hold to "get so...

Re: Protecting outdoor metal work table?

I blacksmith as a hobby and I usually take a rag, shoot some wd40 on it and wipe down my anvil and post vise with it. This would allow you to still get a good ground if you want to weld on it occasionally, something clear coat could take away- the wd40 works like a charm

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

We didn't figure for any distortion in the pipe, it's there but not a concern. I bet if we Lasered the flanges the middle one would be 1/4" or so lower than the end ones... distortion isnt something that's typically thought about on the bigger stuff, especially here since install is going to b...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

I've done about 60 of these 4" flanges in the last couple weeks. Weld a flange on, cut a 12" saddle 7" back from the weld...put another flange on. I'm not going to lie I'm really looking forward to getting the ss headers done with so we can move on to carbon, I've probably only got a ...

Tip tig experience

Just got a tip tig in the shop, I hadn't even heard of it two weeks ago, but it's awesome so far! It's just going to take some getting used to as far as the weight compared to my 150 amp rig. We're prefabbing a bunch of piping for hydronics on a new power plant for the city, boss bought it hoping to...
