Miller autoset issue?

I’ve always called this issue burn back, miller seems to call it something else. Basically my wire is hunting and pecking in the puddle. It will hit and burn back halfway to the contact tip and hit again.  I can control it fine if i turn autoset off and manually adjust the wire feed speed.  My quest...

Re: Still holding out on the inverters, transformers always

I have an account there and I’ll tell you what I told them.

60 years in a metal fab shop in Atlanta running 5 days a week. 3 years in my home shop running 4 days a week. Completely original.

Still holding out on the inverters, transformers always work

I’ve got a lot of welders, every single one is transformer. For stick I’m always going to use transformers, but MIGS: Miller 130xp, MM35, 211 w/MVP and Lincoln 3500hd, sp100, sp135, new style 125hd, 140hd, 180hd and a few others just to name a few. I’m not hurting for another machine..... but I’m cu...

Re: Getting arc shots

Thanks for the response. The reason I haven’t been happy with fixed lens is the green color. Even using gold lens hasn’t given me a color as true as the Viking on camera. I like fixed gold lens in real life. I have a cheater lens that i tried and it gave some distortion in the video when using it. I...

Getting arc shots

I’m pretty sure aside of weld.com most people are pretty jelly of Jody’s beautiful arc shots. Most of us, including me, would rather sink the $ into a welder than a camera so I’ve been trying to come up with ways to get a decent arc shot with common items. My most successful setup is a GoPro Session...

Re: vertical 7018 stringers

I have a different issue with 7018 vert, or maybe the same who knows..... i can run it weave like I’ve been doing it all my life, but I can’t do stringers. I know and understand that I’m building a weld puddle onto itself, but just don’t seem to have a technique that works. When I’m weaving I’m stac...

Re: Can't see where where I'm running the bead

What helped me the most was learning how to run beads left and right handed. back and forth both ways. Depending on whether or not you are left handed or right handed, you'll have to cross over and favor one side over the other.

Yeah B is the usual recommended setting for the lincoln superglaze (20v). The chart is different for the 140, and probably says E for it.

Re: I could use some help with aluminum

Isn't A more like 10V, not 22V? If you divide by 2 it is. Only the lincoln C (any model) drops below 19v I guess I've been looking at the wrong machines then. You have the 180HD? I checked the chart on one of them at the store earlier today. 1/8" aluminum should be on setting E, not A, for the...

Re: I could use some help with aluminum

Correct, I didn't say spool gun. Aside of some choppy feeding with cheaper spool guns, all of them feed ally pretty well. Huh? Isn't this your post? Isn't the entire thread about ally MIG via a spoolgun? I accept that you meant MIG ally with a MIG box and not via a spool gun, but the words were you...

To clarify, i said the 5/8 plate, not 5/8ths plate. The base says 5/8 on it. I know it reads both ways, but you said 5/8".

Re: WHAT AM I DOING WRONG

If you don't quit grinding all your weld metal away you're never going to get it strong enough to keep smacking it with a hammer. Step....away...from...the...grinder. Grinder is for prep, not finish. If there's more weld metal than you want, don't put so much in. You are in control of that. There's ...

Re: Argon Tank Shut Off?

It's not hard to form a habit. Turn it on when you get there, turn it off when you're done. Some machines leak inside, some don't. I had a Miller that would lose from 2000 down to 1200 overnight and no amount of troubleshooting could find that leak. Took it apart 3 times looking. My Lincoln's have n...

Re: I could use some help with aluminum

I did quite a bit project with a spool gun same specs as yours, 0.35 4043 on 1/8 alu. But I had big pieces, 2.5 inch wide c channel that I’d bent out of 1/8 thick alu sheets, 4 foot lengths. I had to go really fast to not burn through, a 2.5 inch weld took maybe 3-4 seconds. Turning it down let to ...

Re: I could use some help with aluminum

Never said this with a straight face, but it ain't me, it's the material. Since I'm globbing i have to turn up the wire speed, but when I do I burn too hot and leave a ridge. Only choice is to turn the voltage down and I can't. I'm on A, first setting. So to prove it i put the two pieces i cut back ...

Re: I could use some help with aluminum

What's weird is lincoln says use setting A for voltage. This machine is a lot hotter than you think, but it isn't THAT hot. I've been using B and trying to find a nice medium. If i go above B or go too fast on wire speed it makes a crater down the bead no matter how fast i move. Even halfway up on v...

I could use some help with aluminum

.035 4043 spool 180 Lincoln mig 1/8" aluminum flat bar stock I've cut 2x2 coupons to assemble in a cube for practice. Mostly my problem is that it is coming out slowly globular. The recommended settings (which I never go by) aren't even close, but since I'm trying a new trick I started there. I...

Finally upgraded the Bench grinder

I've been using the gutless wonder for about a year now, cursing it every time it grinds to a halt. It was a Ryobi 2.1 amp. Nothing special, but was hoping for more than it was able to do. The speed was fine, but no torque. Even light pressure slowed it down. My Dewalt angle grinders have been beast...

Intentional contamination of the surface

Sometimes when I stick weld I use spatter spray, but PAM not the $15 option from the weld store. Mostly just on the welding table, but sometimes I lightly coat the metal of the part as well if it's going to be several welds requiring a long cleanup. Basically the question is should I not do that?
