haha well that makes much more sense.

I'll give it a go, my controls use Pulse Freq (Hz), Pulse Base Amps %, and Pulse Time On %. So I'll figure out how they match up.

Re: First beads

If you can set your machine to Kohls on ABC, that 30% peak amperage, 10% background, and that your pulse rate to 1.5 pulses per second. Set your AC frequency to the highest setting your machine has, and Try setting the balance to 80% haha, sorry, but this went right over my head. Not sure what Kohl...

Re: First beads

Starting amps is generally a parameter in the software. 2T and 4T both can take advantage of that background software settings if your machine has that. I frequently use a 3/32 tungsten with a number 5 cup without issue. But for the material thickness that you are working with, a 1/16 would be bett...

Re: First beads

Was just researching cup sizes, in relation to tungsten dia, and flow rates. Could it be that the #5 cup is too small for the 3/32 tungsten? Charts show #6-8

Re: First beads

Material that thin will be extremely difficult to weld on aC. Your arc needs a good deal of amps to start, maybe your box isn’t a more “quality” unit so you’ll need to use a truck: set a ore flow of gas for about 2 seconds, then start the arc. The argon helps evacuate atmosphere and stabilize the a...

Re: First beads

Wondering what sort of issue I have going on here. During arc start, I'm intermittently getting a ton of arc scatter, like a an electrical storm with lightening strikes. It chews up the starting area with porosity. Once the arc has stabilized I get a sound buzzing sound that cuts in and out (louder ...

Re: Replacement diffuser screen

Ah, good idea, will do.

Ordered the new parts, now I've got to figure out what settings I had munged up so I don't repeat, but that's for a different post.

Thanks for the help!

Any ideal how to replace the screen on this stubby gas lens (from kit) I bought from the Weldmonger store? Or Am I buying a whole new deal?

I don't see a place in the store where I can buy a screen or just an entire stubby gas lens.

Thanks!

Re: First beads

Chocking the tungsten in a drill works well, spin it slowly, and directly inline with the tungsten and you’ll get a super smooth and clean tip. I also use a red scotchbrite afterwards and polish the length and tip when I work with stainless and ally. As for penetration, it all depends. Thinner mate...

Re: First beads

You do not want grind marks on your tungsten. And if you have them, they want to be inline with the tungsten, not at an angle. It may not make a lot of difference as you learn the basics, but it will haunt you when it matters. A helpful thing to do as you learn to add filler, scribe 2 parallel line...

Re: First beads

not trying to cheap shot ya, but tig is the hardest to do, especially aluminum. your really jumping in the deep end here. i would switch that welder over to stick welding mode, grab some sticks and go weld beads with that first. Haha, well I'm competitive, stubborn, and I've got nothing but time to...

Re: First beads

Finally found some time last weekend to put down few beads and try out some new gear. This hobby has shown me that I'm in need of some reading glasses. So I found this .75 magnifier and installed it in my helmet. IMG_0539.jpg IMG_0540.jpg And while having pretty decent ventilation in my garage I wan...

Haha I'm shocked your copy wasn't hand lettered on ancient papyrus ;-) Have you ever made made your own paper, and bound a book from scratch? I have. I could teach you a thing or two about planing for creep, sewing signatures, and perfect binding them together. It's an art form in itself. So before...

Just a standard Murex pocket (assuming you're a kangaroo) guide book printed on an ancient material called paper. You can google paper up and learn about it. LinKon now owns Murex, and they sort of duplicated the rod guide for people with phones smarter than they are. http://www.lincolnelectric.com...

I was just busting your chops. I hear you, Franz. As the old saying goes, "There are many roads to Rome". I'll pick one, for three, and enjoy the inevitable lessons of humility on the way. I recently bought the book called Metals And How to Weld Them, so I figure that's a good start at un...

Re: Gearing up - Way too many questions

TIG welding can be done by mere mortals with some guidance, lots of practice, and more guidance along the way. Given your confession about your objectives and background, I think you'll be rather capable of getting 2 pieces of metal to stick together without risking someone's life needlessly. Your ...

I got a whole bottle full of pills for the blood pressure so no need for concern on that score. Maybe this approach will work for you. Re: First beads

Move the fan farther away. The negative air flow will pull your shielding gas away. Your tungsten tip for DC does not want to be blunted; that’s a tip for AC. That grinding wheel is too coarse also. You should not have those grind marks visible. Get a diamond wheel or at least a silicon carbide whe...

I love your persistence! Keep going; the only way to learn. Your beads aren't bad for the first time. They show a lot of promise. Watch Jody's videos, order (from Jody) some 2% laninated tungsten, keep you tungsten close to the puddle, back off, on the pedal towards the end of the bead, and practic...

Re: First beads

doing it without someone to show you is difficult, as i'm finding out the hard way. one of the first bits of advice i found was starting with stick. i can see why. you still need to watch the same important things like arc length, but stick is easier than tig. plus its so useful even if its messy. ...

OK, you got a machine, and you got a cylinder of gas, and it sounds like the man who sold you the cylinder was fairly honest since he gave you a pressure gauge and explained how to use it to you. Now, lets look at what you haven't got! It definitely sounds like you haven't got experience welding wi...
