Re: chop saw blade deflecting

If you plan on using a steel cut off blade, make sure the saw RPM is within blade rating. Most steel saws like the Evolution run at lower RPM than abrasive saws.

Re: Bondo Instead of Excessive Filler?

Where I am in Texas, we don't have a problem with paint. Not much snow, no salt on roads, no ocean salt, & this year no rain! Less than 3" on my place since Sept last year!

Re: Bondo Instead of Excessive Filler?

Most GOOD trailer manufacturers use seam seal/caulk to finish joints that are skip welded. Makes the paint job look better, just like GOOD house painters seal the cracks before they paint.

The OEM QC bracket is welded with MIG I'll bet. So - parameters correct, your skill level OK, weld procedure right.

All is well.

Re: Help with Oxy acetylene welding

Then once you get shiny steel, hold the flame on the angle & just touch the blue point at the tip on the angle right at the joint just long enough to puddle. Keep the point off the edge of the flat bar. Once you puddle then back the torch off to normal tip distance & go to town.

Use stainless for the top frame if possible & for sure stainless bolts for the top. Antiseize the bolts & you should be able to control the corrosion.

Should be fine outside under the carport. Just make a canvas cover that can be removed when using it, or build a box cover that can be removed when you want to use it.

6011 root pass, then 7018AC. That RR iron is going to need some preheat & the 6011 pass will do that if you come back quick with the 7018.

I have used one, they work pretty good fr small jobs. I use a welding hood with clear plates instead of the cheezy hood they include with the pot.

With a good compressor it works OK.

Might be a good solution - The DHC Cobra torch is a niche tool. but plenty cool for some uses.

Re: what's the cause of this?

350 to 400* preheat, then 7018 might get you somewhere if you let it cool down SLOW.

Just don't hang 1000# pounds on it with something you want to keep underneath it (toes, fingers, etc.), cause it might work or it might not - only determined with destructive testing.

Re: Trouble starting 6011 "First Strike"

Most red iron welders (purlin is 14 - 16 ga) use 1/8 6011 with a quick whip & pause technique that works well. Takes some practice - you have to light up & move, but once you get it down you can lay a good looking bead on some thin stuff.
