Re: Tacking Stainless Nuts to Carbon Steel Plate?

In practical terms, no nothing terrible is going to happen, your nuts probably won't strictly be stainless anymore if they're allowed to overheat and if you use er70 series wire the weld is going to be prone to corrosion but there's absolutely nothing inherently wrong with welding carbon to stainles...

Re: Mig welding with c10 gas

You can short circuit just fine with 90/10. I LOVED the 93/7 mix I used one time when I was welding anything under 1/8". You'll lose a little bit of heat compared to 75/25 but it'll weld with a lot less spatter otherwise in my experience.

I'm a huge idiot that didn't even realize solar charging hoods were a thing, so I looked up my sentinel A50, and while a bunch of reviews said it had solar cells, I saw nothing about it on ESAB's website and to the best of my knowledge CR2450s aren't rechargeable so I'm guessing my hood doesn't cha...

Are Cubitron 982C/987C still the best for rapid material removal?

Not that Cubitron resin discs aren't already hard enough to get ahold of as is if you don't buy a whole case of 25. But the things are absolutely amazing. I am aware of their 982 CX pro version which susposedly cuts even faster but I've been entirely unsuccessful in finding out where to actually buy...

Re: Would anyone actually be interested to see a Benchmark Abrasives TCT blade tested out?

I went ahead and ordered the blade, and so far I've cut a couple pieces of 2" 3/16 flat bar like butter and also a 3" 3/8 coupon in half just as a test, it went right through that as well so it definitely cuts well.
We will see in the upcoming weeks how well it lasts.

I had a bunch of little cut ends from building wood shed, I found if I split them into halves if I played with the blower just right I could get steel red hot with wood too, without the blower, it actually would probably make a pretty good grill

Here's what happens when you have a bucket full of scrap steel, a few too many beers and you regret selling your torch and being unable to heat things anymore, you make this thing. The main rule I had for this thing is that it had to be utterly free, I could not spend a single cent on it minus charc...

Re: Stel S300 on a 400V, 3-phase up-converting transformer

1200A?? I'm guessing a Subarc machine? I can't imagine anything else that could require that many amps, gouging probably, but on WHAT? No welding equipment, it's a machine. BIG machine. Has BIG motors on it. Just the main motor for it is 600HP. I'm told just that motor pulls around 750A continuous....

Re: Would anyone actually be interested to see a Benchmark Abrasives TCT blade tested out?

My saw is what appears to be an old discontinued northern tool equivalent to an evolution circular saw. It runs at 3500RPM rather than the more typical 5800 RPM of a standard circ saw. RPM does play a big role in tooth durability I believe, I've had occasions where my saw has been anything but smoot...

Would anyone actually be interested to see a Benchmark Abrasives TCT metal cutting blade tested out? My saw has a 20mm arbor to begin with and I've just been getting by with surprisingly good luck using the diamond punch out with the 48 tooth diablo disks. As much crap as I put my saw through on top...

Re: How hot does your tig torch get?

If I feel the heat through my glove enough for it to start to feel comfortable with a 17 torch I usually just take it as a sign that it's time to stop, let the machine cool, let the torch cool, and perhaps most importantly let the part cool while I hydrate for a few minutes, I know that's not always...

Re: Anyone tried these on mill scale?

Yup, I've played with acid extensively on home projects in an attempt to both be lazy and to avoid leaving gouge marks in everything, vinegar will work in a pinch when let sit for a good while especially on reasonably light scale, and mixing up a batch of fresh citric acid works quite well too in my...

Re: PLUG weld aluminum question

Tig for sure, and it shouldn't show if properly welded with the right filler, depending on the aluminum alloy you happen to be welding, 5356 could be a better choice as it won't discolor/oxidize as weirdly as 4043 can but it depends on the alloy. If it'll be anodized or exposed to anything remotely ...

I only ever weave in two situations with mig, when I'm running uphill, running downhill on thin material with a large gap or open root plate/pipe beveled to a knife edge. In any of those aforementioned situations you REALLY want to make sure you're in short circuit mode and not globular unless you h...

Not becoming comfortable with the foot pedal will only steepen the learning curve in the long run. While not as entertaining, I'm a very big believer on running a bead pad on thicker material to become more proficient at anything you struggle with, practicing joints raises the difficulty and the cos...

Seems like if you have a plasma table EVERYONE is interested, at least that's been my perspective of seeing shops occasionally stop by the school hoping to make a deal to get parts cut out. If it's set right the cut quality is good enough no finishing is necessary for many things other than to prep ...

Re: What is Best Practice to Bridge a Wide Gap

I've ran a bead along one of the two edges before which helped bridge the gap, then ran a second pass to tie the now smaller gap together, and also used the whole lay a piece of 1/8" filler in the gap and blast it in before laying a bead over the top method before. I'd suggest the second one fo...

Agreed, nobody is just going to jump into stick and run it well, some people can get passably decent a whole lot faster with mig than you'd think, especially if the machine is set right. But stick, you've just got to burn about 20-30lbs of rods running bead pads and filling up T joints before it'll ...

Metal cutting circular saw for beveling plate?

Believe I saw a thread about this a long time ago, unless you don't exactly need the practice, it's not much fun to do an open root weld with gouged up uneven poorly beveled plate that you tried to do with an angle grinder and a rather lacking amount of skill with it. I've gotten to where I can do a...
