Re: question about tig torch

In my opinion, this is the best way to scratch start with GTAW. Rest the cup on the work. Hold your tungsten about 3/32" or 1/8" off the work. Drag a piece of filler metal across the tungsten and the work, like striking a match, to close the circuit for a split second which will establish a...

Re: mig amperage.

Hey texican. with any wire fed process or constant voltage machine, your amperage, is your wire speed. the more inches per minute or ipms, the more amperage. amperage is the number of electrons flowing past a given point every second. voltage is the amount of pressure pushing the electrons. brian

Re: Help! Too much of a newbie to figure this out.

6013's are normally used as sheet metal rods, very low penetrating. So on 1/4" plate with a 1/8" rod your about right at 140 amps. But, i'm with everyone else on using 6010 or 11 and 7018 rods.

Re: ah yes tig aluminum..everyone has issues heh

Hey Canuck, I think the problem your having has to do with the pressure building in the pipe. As the tubing or pipe heats up it builds pressure inside. When you seal up the weld seam the pressure has nowhere to go so it blows the molten puddle out. The best way to fix this is drill a small hole thro...

Re: noobie needs help

Any of the things that Rick has pointed out or could be that 100 Amps is to hot for 1/16" or 1/4" stainless. The hotter it is the darker the weld gets. That joint configuration your talking about would be ok welded around 65 or 70 amps. Thats just my opinion. Some people may be a little ho...

Re: ah yes tig aluminum..everyone has issues heh

I would say you have narrowed it down to the filler material being the reason for the porosity. Every 10# box of aluminum filler I have ever bought has had some sort of grease or lube on it. I guess from the extrusion process. I clean most all of my filler and base material with acetone. Although, I...

Some regulators or flow meters are different. It should say top of ball or bottom of ball on the tube. Maybe. I have seen it both ways and I have seen them with no labeling.

316 filler will be fine on 304 base metal, its just a little more expensive than 308.

Sorry man, It wasn't a yes or no question. Apparently no one here has had much experience with different floor coatings. If anyone had anything to say, Im sure they would have. I've only had a bare concrete floor in my shops, worked fine.

Hold your tungsten about 1/8" off the work with the cup resting on the work. Drag your filler across the work and tungsten to close the circuit for a split second which will establish an arc.

Can you find out more about this test. Open root? Backing bar? Hardwire root, up or down? Thickness of material and backing if there is one? Innershield or outershield? Diameter of wire? What shielding gas? Any of this might help bring in some tips. The company, the QC man, or the CWI, should be abl...

Re: Tig and Mig gasses

You can use 100% Argon with hardwire or outershield fluxcore. The hardwire does not weld as nice with 100% as 75% / 25%. Im not sure why though. As for TIG with 75% / 25% The carbon in the CO2 contaminates the hot tungsten and makes for a not so nice weld.

Some things that have helped me, Steve. Talk to everyone you possibly can. Try to get your name in everyones ear. Word of mouth goes a long way. If you have some down time, stop at random places and give them a business card. If you don't have any, you need some. Don't call people to tell them about...

I would say your right about the tubing being dirty. Aluminum does have to be very clean. It could also be anodized, if it doesn't look dirty. Thats where the pulse would come in handy. Your in the range on all your settings. As long as your on A/C. The best thing I could tell you would be read the ...

I must not be as good as Will. I've only had part of my right nipple burnt off. But I would say he's right, You can do alot with a small to medium MIG machine. Plus the learning curve on a MIG is fairly quick, for most people.

Re: ER70S-2 mild steel TIG welding rod question

It depends on how much rust and how critical the pieces your welding are. It will work, but its hell on your liner and you will have some porosity. If you can, strip off enough to get to some cleaner wire.

The strongest weld you can do, is 1.5 to 2 times the diameter rod or filler you are using. 3/32"rod=9/64"-3/16" bead or 1/8"rod=3/16"-1/4" bead and so on. Some people will disagree but tests done by people alot smarter than us have proven it. Im not at all saying that i...
