Re: Meltdown....

sounds like you are on reverse polarity...aka dcep

you may have the leads swapped in which case your polarity selector will be lying to you.

Re: welding magnesium

Im wondering if anyone can let me know if you can weld magnesium on a motor bike, if so what would the process be, Thanks yes it can be done. tig is the process. but it is very tricky , http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/welding-magnesium.html oil soaked magnesium castings have made many a preache...

Re: sheilding staineless

pure argon is the way to go. 75/25 argon/ co2 is only for mig, never for tig and never for purging.

Re: advice on welder and plasma cutter

I think you are right on track with your choices for welders and plasma cutters. Hypertherm has a very solid reputation and is commonly used as a power source for cnc plasma cutting tables. You have got to think if the cnc plasma table makers recommend hypertherm as the power source for a cutter tha...

post welding jobs information

http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/welding-jobs.html

Just cocked and loaded an email asking people to post any information on welding jobs to the page above.
It would be great if we could get a bunch of posts and put some people to work.

thanks for any help

Re: stainless stick welding on pipe

in my opinion, a 30 degree bevel and a tig root is called for. I dont believe you can achieve decent quality with a stick root on this.

stainless stick is hard enough to make look good for fill and cap passes. unless its in a vise.

Re: boat propeller welding

it might be cheaper for you to offer to buy him a new one. I have welded a bunch of them,

if its not worn too bad, 4043 will work fine. but will most of the time have some porosity. 4047 works better ...less porosity

good luck,

Re: tig welding rod for 4130

wyatt, get some e70s2 mild steel tig rod and call it a day. 309 works but if it cracks later on, you have to weld it with 309 again.
not worth the extra money in my opinion. 309 is great to have around though,..especially when you are not sure what you are welding.

Re: F%&*ING POROSITY!!!

2 things come to mind...turn voltage down just a little...like half a volt. and increase stickout .
I have seen it before also... and I am with you on it driving you nuts too because aside from the piping porosity, everything seems to be going really well.

good luck with your stick test.

Re: Stick welding 4130?

sure it can be done,...but it might not be a good idea depending on what it is. 3/32" 7018 that is new out of the box, or out of a rod oven would be my choice. Watch your arc strikes. thats where cracks will start if its a stressed part. With it being only .090 thick, you are going to need a ti...

Re: Aerospace Welding Test

Good answer there romij, inconel 718 and a few others actually contain a bit of aluminum content to allow heat treatment strengthening. that little 1 percent or so of aluminum really makes the puddle sluggish...especially if you ever let the hot tip of your rod get outside the argon shielding coming...

Re: Cutting test coupons

polish the cross section as shiny as you can with fine grit paper to get the saw marks out and then spray some purple power cleaner on it and leave alone for a minute. this will etch the surface and bring out the weld nugget as opposed to the base metal. if the purple power is not strong enough, red...

Re: Mig Wire feed settings

the counting 6 seconds thing is only used as a reference for comparing apples to apples ie same wire size. like if you have your settings down perfectly at 250 ipm on one machine using .035 wire and then you have to weld on a different machine also with .035 wire. but you can still use the chart for...

Re: NOOBY TIG problem (1st of many no doubt!!)

hey, try switching to a #6 or 7 cup. your argon is not shielding the metal and it looks like you have one those cups thats actually too big and its sucking air. a # 6 or 7 cup with 15-18 cfh should work fine. if you want to verify this , light up with your current setup for a few seconds, taper off ...

Some people turn into Barney Fife when they get a badge. you should ask him to audit your shop to help you comply with ANZI 49.1 . make him get in the boat with you. how is he going to ding later on if he helped you get into compliance? My guess is he wont want to dig into ANZI 49.1 in the first pla...

Re: tig welding arc problem

ditch the pure and go to a 2% thoriated very sharp pointed electrode.
I will bet money, most if not all of your problems will go away.

If you are concerned about the thorium then, 2 or 1.5 percent lanthanated is almost as good

Re: tig welding arc problem

not really sure, but here are some thoughts.

try pre purging by tapping the foot pedal to get the argon flowing
try using a standard collet body vs gas lens and see if one is better
what type electrode? 2% thor? cer? lanthanated? pure?
does it do it on both ac and dc?
