Re: Cap/Cover passes for the blind: part deuce

Had this problem with the MIG again today. Seems to REALLY be a problem when I start trying to run caps with spray arc. If I stay at a shade 10 the flare coming off the arc blinds me from seeing.....if I go up to 11 or 12, no more flare but I might as well be wearing a blindfold as everything outsid...

Get some Royal 220t filler from Crown alloys. I use it extensively at our shop. It is billed as a general purpose repair rod that works well on a variety of stainless and tool steel. just found this filler on their site as well: ER 409Nb Used primarily for welding catalytic converters and exhaust sy...

Cap/Cover passes for the blind: part deuce

I'm almost to the point of giving up on ever taking another MIG/FLUX test again. This seems to be a pretty common problem in the field so I'm hoping to get enough feedback to test in the shop and develop a consistent solution. To recap my situation and experience: -I am professional welder/ fabricat...

Ok so this one isn't stick welding but it definitely qualifies as bad ass.

Vertical Up Remediation

We've been getting some heavy work through the bay doors as of late that need a vertical up weld....and being that I've gotten into the fabrication side of things I've usually opted to flip the piece rather than weld uphill.

What should my parameters be for 1/2'', 3/4'', and 1'' steel plate?

Re: Fibre Metal Tigerhood Futura XXL

definitely better than 3m's cool blue....same effect but a lot more vivid. It almost seems to dim the arc without sacrificing the light around the base metal. 280 I think is what holtsen gas quoted me. Dont quote me on that as I might be way off. The closest thing I've used to it is Sperian's Optrel...

Re: Fibre Metal Tigerhood Futura XXL

Just wanted to give a review on this hood....got a hold of a demo from the Fibre Metal rep. The visual clarity is bar none. I mean that. I have never seen the weld puddle and base metal so clearly. The lens looks like one of those old school "cool blue" filters. It is however a bit heavier...

Re: welding A2 tool steel

here is a link to the composition of the filler metal. http://www.crownalloys.com/MSDS/MSDS-RO ... 20-TIG.pdf

I preheated the materials to 400 F.....I post heated by slowly backing off the arc as the shop I work for doesnt have an oven. Perhaps it wasnt enough post heat.

welding A2 tool steel

Had a job come in the shop yesterday which involved welding sleeves around soild 3'' pieces of round A2. Welding supply stores are closed on saturday and we dont keep tool steel filler on hand so I tried using some stainless/chromoly/nickel bastard filler called Royal T220. Long story short, the fir...

Re: Guidelines for AWS D1.1 FCAW-G test

Honestly after being in the field for a few years I let my "certification" lapse.(which was a 4G 7018 unlimited thickness endorsement) 9 times out of 10, every company you apply to will require you to certify under their own criteria. Certified welder is a bullshit title just like "ma...

I've been a welder/fabricator for 5 years now and i still to this day have trouble seeing MIG and especially flux core. What's funny is that I have NO trouble doing some micro tig work I get on a weekly basis that requires me to make a fusion weld on the bottom of a 2mm washer. -groove out the joint...

I second Otto's comments on the ESAB consumables. The shop I work for uses ESAB ER70S-6 .035 exclusively and it is the most inconsistent wire I have ever used. Lincoln is the way to go for consumables.

If you could order a personalized hood ... what capabilities would you add on to make it a 'perfect' hood?

Alexa
Something that reflects light back to the workpiece like a gold passive lens but is auto darkening.

The ability to change the filter color with the push of a button.

Has anyone heard of these hoods? http://www.newequipment.com/Main/Products/Tigerhood-Futura-XXL-Welding-Helmet-34349.aspx I'm considering dropping the change to pick one up but I don't want another experience like the one I had with Jackson's Trusight auto lens. Re: Welding order, square frame tubing

I second tacking first. I never weld anything out before I have it tacked and braced up. I also tack hotter than I plan on welding. This keeps me from shitting myself when i'm underneath a 1/2" plate and I dont hear tacks break.

get a shade 9 pipeliner lens and a pancake hood. 160$ for the set and you'll never get any sunglare coming in the back of your hood. and if u cant see what you're welding with a shad 9 then you shouldnt be welding imo. A shade 9 lens is fine for lighter welding but is only gonna make matters worse ...

You may need a stronger prescription for your glasses.
