Re: welding in microgravity and/or vacuum

Does anyone know of a paper describing welding in a VACUUM in space? Can't help eith a paper, but get metal surfaces polished and close fitting enough and it will cold-weld in vacuum if pressed/rubbed together hard enough :) <CLIP> But then in a vacuum you could make direct use of electron beam 'gu...

welding in microgravity and/or vacuum

I was thinking about space-x and the possibility of building in space. A search of welding mentioned several welding experiments in the long ago past (1969 and 1973) but it seems the experiments were gas shielded in microgravity. There are several experiments again on board planes and in freefall dr...

Klutch® MIG/Stick 220SI

anyone actually USE a Norther Tool Klutch welder? http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200631881_200631881 seems like a good deal for a hobby welder and price w/spool gun is about the same as lincoln 140a w/o the gun. I learned to weld last summer on my own with a borrowed Lincoln SP-135 a...

Re: what wire to get?

Mick, Thanks for that link. I read it over and know LOTS more than I used to about wire. Turns out the local Home Depot does have self shielded wire just in 1lb spools for $11 and Loews has for $14. Will be driving out to Airgas and buying 2lbs for $16 and now I know what to ask for to get what I re...

what wire to get?

I am learning to weld on mild steel. After a short time I used up the the partial spool of flux-core in the welder I borrowed. The empty spool is labeled E71T-11 but the local box store only has ER70S-6 and either way I don't know what those numbers mean. Are they the same? I can make a 30 min drive...

NooB question

I am GOING to learn to weld come spring. I will borrow my in-laws flux core welder and teach myself in the back yard. Reading EVERYTHING that I can find about welding and have learned a LOT from the tipsandtricks videos but I came accross something that just plain stumped me. Is welding machine outp...

Re: newbie OUTDOOR welding station questions

Thanks for answering my questions. I have a framing square and a "quick layout" triangle square. Will add a couple more types of squares to the list. I have a scribe but at this point don't know what I would use it for in welding.. guess I will find out soon enough. As for the welding scre...

newbie OUTDOOR welding station questions

I am new to hobby welding and I have yet to pull the trigger on a welder. The welder I am borrowing (trying before buying) is a older 115v Miller 140 MIG that is gas ready but no bottle and currently set up for flux core welding. I don't have anyplace like a garage or shed to weld inside and with th...
