Re: Bronze to SS tubing??

I whacked the little bronze end tab with a ball-peen. It only bent slightly at the thinnest where the mounting screw was cut off. The bronze base will be fit and brazed to the ID so it would reinforce the SS tubing. I'll try to keep most of the heat at the thicker bronze center. Should be OK.

Re: Bronze to SS tubing??

Well Dang! Didn't take a careful look at the stanchions but cut and fitted the bronze base to a 'scrap' piece of tubing. Tried the fit up on the boat and forgot about warping, so I'll have to fit each piece individually. In the mean time, with one of the cutoff pieces of bronze base plate laying aro...

Re: Bronze to SS tubing??

Hey thanks Steve! Never thought of soldering. I'll give it a try. I'll make the next fitting a slight taper fit and open the end of the tubing. Should work great.

Bronze to SS tubing??

Boat project. I am making railings from 1 1/2" SS tubing(304?) I want to add pole holders to the open ends of the vertical tubes. The bases have tapered/hex receivers that I cut and ground to fit the open end of the 1 1/2 OD SS stanchions. The question is how to 'weld these things together. I h...

Re: Anyone make an inter-cooler?

Are you talking about an air to air with one heat exchanger or air to liquid with 2 heat exchangers...and is the air to liquid type even needed? My original thought was a liquid heat exchanger in a plenum to cool the air between the turbo and intake and a separate H/E out front to cool the liquid. T...

Anyone make an inter-cooler?

I just got a 2000 7.3 PSD VAN. Ford didn't put an inter-cooler in Vans. I'd like to make one but need a lot of help with design and ideas.

This is a neat trick from jody. I tried it on .063 and you have to have zero gap...but it works.

Tig SS

I was wondering if it would be OK to fill a SS tube with nitrogen to prevent sugaring instead of using argon?

Just thought it would be easier and cheaper than using argon.

That was my guess too but there is definitely no space between the 3 and 8 and something after the 38 that I can't read.

Ideas for turntable?

Need ideas on how to make a turntable to run a bead more than 3/4" at a time around a tube/base.

I have a small 2'X2' rolling welding table that fits under my bigger table. I'd like to have a removable turntable for it. Also how to attach the ground.

Any ideas?

Identify MIG wire???

I have this 30 lb roll of .045" MIG wire. I presume it's a SS wire but the label is very faded. I'm more guessing on these numbers but this what I think I can read. TYPE: ER38 Size: .045" W.O. #: 95A075 Specs: AWS A5.9 Again, I'm just guessing. Some of the numbers may be letters or some of...

I'm curious what happened.

Harder seats are generally added to aluminum heads but normally machined to accept seats matched to the type of valve and use.

Re: Which machine to purchase

As I have mentioned, I have the everlast 225LX which has the AC/DC specifically bought for the aluminum option. I never TIGed aluminum before and never had HF or a foot control in a little Harbor Freight 130 amp TIG. Maybe the difficulty in learning with the Harbor Freight TIG made it fairly easy to...

Re: longevity vs everlast just a parameters question

I have the everlast 225LX. I don't know the difference in settings, but on mine, the higher you set the AC balance, the more positive to the torch which minimizes cleaning but increases the temp of the tungsten. While playing around with settings, I could get the tungsten to ball up an vibrate like ...

These are aluminum exhaust manifolds for a marine application. They are water jacketed and I made plugs and fitted and welded to seal off anti-freeze side from the raw water side. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m208/jtybt/exhaust%20system/003-1.jpg http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m208/jtybt/e...

How do I fill aluminum crater/contamination

I have been practicing aluminum with the Everlast 225LX and my practice looks acceptable enuff to try a project. These are 3/8" thick plugs that will be fitted to the holes and recessed down about 3/32" and filled to block off the water passages. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m208/jty...

I'm no expert by any means but I've been doing some SS railing on boats with MIG and TIG. I've found most formed SS is pretty stable as far as distortion. It's the flat stuff that has a life of it's own. The less heat you put into it can keep the distortion down but not by much..and I'm talking abou...

Re: Mig welding copper to mild steel

That's an interesting question. I'm a noob but have been working on boats for a while and in the marine industry, brass and bronze plugs(copper alloys) are regularly use on cast iron blocks and exhaust manifolds with not ill effects. On that basis I would think it safe. I just didn't know it was pos...
