Re: Pure vs. Ceriated/2% tungstens

Since I bought the inverter I pretty much stick to 2% Lanthanated.
A good all around tungsten that performs well in both AC and DC.

Everlast PowerTig 200DX warranty repair

Ok guys, my PowerTig 200DX went nutz and had to go in the shop for repairs. Ray and Oleg were extremely helpful. They had it 4 weeks to the day and I got a call from fast talking Jack that it was done and they'd get it boxed and shipped back asap. Of course Christmas and New Years were in the middle...

Re: Removing broken bolts from the crankshaft?

That's a whole lot easier with an aluminum case. Steel or stainless filler doesn't stick to aluminum.
One false move or wandering arc and you've now welded the stud to the crankshaft.

Re: Removing broken bolts from the crankshaft?

On something like that I'd use some left hand thread shouldered allen head bolts. Drill to tap size, thread with a left thread tap, bottom the bolts to the shoulder, a few quick raps on the head with a ball peen and an allen socket on a small impact tool should spin them puppies out. Avoid "not...

Kind of a tough question. How thick of metal you gonna be working with?
If it's 5/8" steel or less (40 amp machine) get one from Harbor Freight and get
the extended warranty. They're not the best machines but, if it gives up the ghost, they just
hand you a new one.

Re: Two grounds on the same work piece.

When I was at the shipyard it was nothing to have grounds from 20 or more machines attached to the same package.
They would also have a ground directly to earth attached to the packages.

Re: Scratch start with AC

Rectifier? Yes.

DCEN why? Direction of current flow. On DCEP the current will flow from the base metal to the tungsten.
Translation, the heat will build up in the tungsten and melt it away.

It isn't all that hard to build a rectifier.

How far are you from Bath? The shipyards love to hire guys with low to medium experience levels and teach them their way.
Decent pay, good bennies and you get to learn a lot. And you are home every night. No traveling is worth something.

Most times there's nothing wrong with a small, controlled gap in your fitup. Especially when you are looking for a full penetration.

I'm not a welder but have had quite a few experiences with light sensitivity I found the best relief other than drops was a warm compress or bath with the eyes submerged. Quick! Someone find my bullshit card! It's obvious that you have never even experienced a flash burn. Picture a bad sunburn on y...

Re: Eye Irritation

There's not much a doctor will do for welding flash burns except take your money. Stye ointment really helps. It's thick and goopy but will lube the eye while sleeping. Cold compresses and wet tea bags also help. Stay in the dark and take it easy. It's like a sunburn on your eyeball. The burnt layer...

Re: Advice on how to weld this

If 70S mig wire works you should be fine with 309 stainless. I use 309 a lot on old "metric" motorcycle frames where they "laminated layers together". With all that trapped rust and contamination you constantly fight porosity with 70S wire. Switching to 309 seems to control that ...

Steve, at the shipyard we did a lot of 2G in spray transfer both .045" and 1/16" wire. Also a lot of 2F. In certain applications we did 2F spray twin arc with a guy on each side. The lead guy would start the root and get about 2"-3" closed and the lag guy would light up and "...
