High School Welding shop set up

Hi guys, I've been given the task of setting up a new welding shop in a brand new high school. I'm looking for some input as to what power sources to get, drill press, light gauge break and shear, plasma cutter...you name it. This is a NEW shop nothing in it now except 6 welding booths and ventilati...

Cast aluminum

Wow this stuff is tricky. This piece is a belt pulley on a lawn tractor. It breaks repeatedly and they are very difficult to find new. We've tried wire, tig and stick and everything tends to just ball up and not wet in at all. I think it has a high magnesium content as the spatter is very bright blu...

Re: DCEP differences between SMAW and GTAW?

"The preferred polarity of the GTAW system depends largely on the type of metal being welded. Direct current with a negatively charged electrode (DCEN) is often employed when welding steels, nickel, titanium, and other metals. It can also be used in automatic GTAW of aluminum or magnesium when ...

Re: DCEP differences between SMAW and GTAW?

So how is it that with SMAW set on DCEP there is deeper penetration than with DCEN. With GTAW you get more penetration set on DCEN, on DCEP there is so much energy (heat) in the electrode that we need about 1/4" electrode at only 125amps with minimal penetration. I suspect it has to do with the...

DCEP differences between SMAW and GTAW?

Hey guys, Here's a technical question for ya. With SMAW and GMAW, DCEP results in 70% of the arc energy into the work piece where as with GTAW, DCEP results in 70% of the arc energy into the tungsten electrode. Why is that? Particularly with a machine that is capable of both SMAW and GTAW. Intereste...

HELP JODY...WELDING CAMERA?

Hey guys, I am an instructor at a trades school and we are looking at recording some video for students. I was wondering what type of video cameras work best for filming welding? The videos on this site are excellent quality and we are hoping that the students can view the puddle as well as can be o...

Re: Aluminum HELP!!!

So I went back to a 3/32 electrode in a #7 cup went to 20 cfh and voila. Then as stated dialed the balance back from 70 to 40ish and nice sharp point through out the weld. Awesome thanks guys! Things were going so well I attempted the" welding two beer cans together test" and nailed it. wi...

Re: Aluminum HELP!!!

I AM USING A #7 CUP WITH 15CFH. I WILL TRY THE 3/32 ELECTRODE AND MAYBE 20 CFH. I WAS STARTING WITH A SHARP TUNGSTEN AND IT WOULD BALL UP QUICKLY AND BE VERY HOT AFTER ABOUT AN INCH, SO I WILL TRY GOING THE OTHER WAY WITH THE BALANCE. ELECTRODE IS DEFINATELY NOT SHINY! THANKS GUYS, IF PROBLEM PERSIS...
