Well I use the Safety Jogger steel toe semi-boots, its strong, very light and flexible.
Also have the Sketchers safety shoes, comfortable but a bit heavy.

Maybe you are doing it a bit slow so you are building up those beads, try speeding up a bit your travel speed to get some flatter bead welds. Just my personal opinion !

Wow using flat plates of 1/8" thickness and eight feet in height will surely have some problems specially in warpage and distortion. Better yet simply use square tubings or angle irons of 1/4" thickness with some supports here and there. You may even add some geometric or ornamental scroll...

Well if price is not of your concern, then get a Jackson Balder BH3, have read lots of good reviews on this hood. Another great welding hoods are 3M Speedglas or Optrel .

Me, I'm just using ESAB welding helmets which I find very comfortable to use due to its lightness and wide viewing windows.
