Re: AWS welding course in SE La.

That is a really good price for a course with that much seat time. It would fill in a heartbeat around here. Here's to hoping you get a chance to attend.

Good video Jody. The pricing was interesting, and glad to know I wasn't to far off. As watching I was thinking I'd charge $25 each, so pretty close.

So it's been multiple days and your "teacher" can't make their way over to help you out? I'd take my happy ass down to the registers office demand my $$$ back and go to a school were you can actually learn.

Re: TIG helmet suggestions ?

I would like to think everyone who welds keeps what works best for them. Like stated I love my nexgen for tig, but don't use for anything else. My speedglass is for stick/mig, also my fixed is for long lasting jobs or when I want a really big viewing area if tough to see. My fixed is another nexgen ...

Re: Welding helmet

In that price range is get a nice fixed shade hood and save for a nice auto. IMO there's no reason to get a cheap auto. Again my opinion but when planning on an auto I budget $400. I know there's nice helmets in the $250 range as well but when it comes to my eyes I go with what I like best and has a...

Re: CK pyrex kit issue

For what your doing here, I'd be using a 7 cup and gas lens. Only time I use the jumbo lens' is when doing titanium work, and even then a gas lens and 12 is usually sufficient.

My setup for what you are trying to do would be 3/32 tungsten, #7 cup, gas lens, machine set to 100 or so use foot pedal. 309 filler in .045. Tungsten sharpened to a point.

I'm a proponent of having a dedicated machine for each process, some will disagree just my preference. If your going to do serious stick work I would get a different machine unless you can find an ac/dc

While I love the outcome of this thread, I do have one tidbit to add for those wanting to brush up on their symbols reading. Hobart has an online symbols reading course, work at your own pace deal that will cover the basics, and if memory serves me right it's $89. While I believe you'll get more fro...

I love my Jackson nexgen for tig. I like my speedglass but kept flashing myself as it only has 3 sensors. Jackson has 4 and is clear as day.

Last time I did spring mounts on axle tubes I built a jig. Like you said a lot of guys said it was unnecessary, however they weren't going to pay for a new diff if it warped.

Re: SS practice, to get right color

While a heat sink will help some, proper prep and travel speed are key. Something tells me you might be moving too slow. Moving faster will help keep things cooler as well. When doing stainless in any place it will fit I use a #7 cup and gas lens.

Re: SS practice, to get right color

How did you prep the plates? Looks like you didn't scotch brite them at all. Did you wipe with acetone? What angle is your torch at? You shouldn't have a problem with color with a 7 cup. Try a 7 with a gas lens. Also post a pics of your torch angle if you could.

Re: Water cooled tig torches.

Frans, I have to contradict Len, unfortunately. I have dissected several WC torches to scavenge components (for emergency fixes at work), and it's quite common for the power lead to be directly in the water path. The power-lead is normally in the coolant return from the torch. This is why every tor...
