i was considering using 309 but thought trying to match low carbon was the answer.
i read that link you posted and will use 309. will try 250 temp preheat.
let it air cool or bury it in a sand bucket?

i have 6 AR500 to mild metal targets to repair.
going to use some preheat and slow cool and regular ER70
or does someone have a better rod choice
or better plan?

like cj said, get the tungsten close and get the root wet before you all rod or you will bridge the two pieces. once you do that you will have a hard time get complete penetration in the root.

i tend to make my tables that i stand at the height of my arms at a right angle to my body or slightly higher.
same when i am sitting at a bench so you stool height has to figure into my finished table height.
just how i do it.

back up the thiner alum with a thicker piece of copper

over the years i have welded a lot of various Japanese aluminum motorcycle parts like cylinders, case parts, swingers, clutch perches, sub frames etc. some brand years weld ok some look like your problem. if it doesn't weld ok, most times it
never will... just my experiences..

since retiring and relocating i now only have a home shop so downsizing was not fun but necessary. leaving a large shop to a smaller one can become challenging. on my property is a unfinished, small undersized garage ( 16x12) with that opens into a small (6x!0) addition. i closed off the little room...
