Re: small print sucks

I tend to gravitate towards the home depot brand just because the grips on a lot of the hand tools aren't as thick as all the new 'ergonomic' rubber/plastic handles on most tools. The new tooling handles take up a lot of room and just don't store as well in tool bags Plus, these plastic-handled too...

Clean shop, nothin! This whole shop looks new - that mill isn't even off the pallet yet. Did somebody win the lottery, or are you launching retirement in style?

Ah, yes... Lincoln just called - it seems they've accidentally shipped my unit to your address. So, if you'd be so kind as to just forward it along... ;-)

Does it still have that new car smell, or have you broken it in yet? First impressions?

Thoughts on this machine doesn't seem bad for price looking at buying one in the coming months http://www.amazon.com/AHP-AlphaTIG-200-Amp-Stick-Welder/dp/B00EL8UQH4 Compared to the rest of the market, that's crazy cheap. It's half the price of an Everlast welder in that range, and Everlast are at t...

Re: Portable SawMill

I believe you've got too many teeth. A rip tooth is filed perpendicular to the blade, chain saw rip chain is made by turning some of the teeth into non cutting rakers. Rip blades tend to have larger teeth spaced further apart to remove more material faster, since ripping is a much easier operation ...

That's the 180-grit version of the wheel I linked to: http://www.mcmaster.com/#8725a81

I bought the 320-grit version and use it to hone the tips after they've been shaped on a regular grinding wheel. Gives a very nice finish.

Gonna revive old thread. Does anyone use the Wolfram brand name tungsten. Would really love to hear feed back if it is worth it. Been using HTP 2%thoriated and 2% lanthanated .40 to 3/32 is what I keep on hand. I do not have any complaints about it but curiosity is killing me about this German made...

Its 400V 3 phases motor. will reverse if 2 phases are switched In a house? Is this normal, or something you've ordered special? In the US we have 240v hot-hot single-phase, which also delivers the more common 120v to neutral. But there's no hope of getting 3-phase power in a residence here. Curious...

Not trying to hijack the thread but like in this situation where someone may have multiple types of filler, how does everyone store their filler? 10# cartons stacked in a corner. 1# tube per type for portability, filled with assorted sizes. Just ordered some Rod Guard 1# tubes, and wishing they cam...

Re: Gas lens VS regular collet body

I realize its a technical subject, so important to be precise with terms. Yes, the argon is ultimately exits the cup at 1ATM, but it's being forced out of the cup at a high rate and at a variety of angles, which generates turbulence. Which is what the gas lens is counteracting. If you were to take a...

Re: Gas lens VS regular collet body

Difference is that argon is not being peacefully poured out of the TIG cup, it's being forced out under pressure in order to deliver a flow rate that ensures good coverage in spite of environmentals. The path of that flow generates its own turbulence, which the gas lens removes by getting everything...

Clearly there's more to it than meets the eye. Is it correct to say that not all fixtures will fit all tables? Their main heavy table seems to be pretty universal in terms of accessories (at least the ones I have access to). Most use the holes drilled in the surface. There's at least one much talle...

Re: This is going to be a long learning process

Yeah, it's a muscle-memory thing that takes many strings of beads. I.e., seat time. I'm still a long way from good-looking welds. A couple thoughts... First, while learning, you're going to dip the tungsten a lot. I found that the tungsten could be pretty fouled and still maintain a stable arc for p...

Re: Welding Table Construction

Good suggestion on exploring a mag-drill option to do it yourself. As a hybrid, see what it'd cost to have a machine shop center drill all the holes before you mag-drill them, so your grid comes out crisp - having the holes lined up precisely is important for the accessories, and for relying on it t...

Re: Gas lens VS regular collet body

I think those are marketing photos from CK, and yeah it's almost certainly smoke to show the behavior. The concept at play with a gas lens is called laminar flow - getting the molecules all flowing uniformly in the same direction. In a regular nozzle, the gas comes out perpendicular to the electrode...

I have had this a couple of times when fit up wasn't great. One thing I found that helped was get a puddle on one side and wash it into other piece. Once the pieces joined welded fine. Howdy, Nash. Food for thought... Folks I've known say automotive is a "young man's game", physically harder to do with age because of the contortions, time spent working overhead under a lift etc. It's also an increasingly computerized industry, if that's a good thing for you. Starting a s...

I like the idea of using a solar collector. I'm not sure you'd need to maintain the heat 7x24... If the goal is to remove moisture, get it up to temp for the required duration, then seal it from moisture (e.g., a large Baggie, maybe with some desiccant thrown in). Stuff in the carton is still good w...

$2800 will get you the 350-amp version in Everlast's EXT digital line. It's recently started shipping with support for single-phase input power. Of course, that's before adding a water cooler. I don't dispute the argument for local service on Lincoln and Miller, but the cost difference makes one pau...
