Re: crisp and soft settings.

Thanks For the info Minnesota. I wasn't aware that some of the newer machines had this ability. I honestly don't do much reading about the newer stuff. I do believe that when you adjust the arc force you still increase/decrease the voltage behind the current. The main reason that the smaller inverte...

Re: crisp and soft settings.

On this "soft or crisp or dig" function I have to disagree with Jodi on the video that was posted. Sorry Jodi if you read this but let me explain. The function you are referring to "dig" or what ever the MFG calls it adjusts the amount of voltage behind the current. It does not m...

Re: AWS D 1.1 Weld Cert

All the D1.1 backer bar tests I have taken have had a 1/4" root gap so I also find that one a bit odd.

Hey Steve,

I have used 309L for this in the past. Do you see any difference between 309 and 309L for something like this?

Re: Root question

I don't use 6011 but its similar to 6010. I like a smaller land and gap about 3/32. I shove it in and let it ride.

I prefer the XX10 on pipe so that is what i would go with. I do like to run some XX18 but it just takes a loot longer.

Re: Down hill cap on pipe?

Hey AK, I guess up there where you are at and in Canada I guess its more common to see the 8010 bead and hot pass. I am assuming it is due to the cold climate making a 6010 bead more brittle. I have only beaded with 6010 but most of the XX10 rod runs the same so I don't think it would be much differ...

Re: Engine drive questions

I got a Ranger 250G as my first machine and it worked great for the stuff i used it for at the time. I have a 305G now and looking to sell it. It is a good machine just not the right machine for the work I am getting in to. I have the sa200 for that. The benefits to the Rangers and TrailBlazers is t...

When you say "call out" work, that to me means portable. Portable to me means engine drive.

Re: Down hill cap on pipe?

When I was doing a lot of structural I picked up a portable rod oven that will hold about 70 pounds of rod. When you are talking about beads on a pipeline job they consider the bead to be the root pass. The rest they refer to as either hot pass, fill pass or the cap. Most of the time the bead is don...

Re: Transformer Vs. Inverter For Stick Welding???

A lot of the inverter machines don't run xx10 rod very well from what I understand. Glad to know that the Invertecs do. Where I'm at I can get fleetweld 5P+ for about $130 a 50 pound can.

How are you going to say that you are getting an SA200 without posting pictures. Let alone a SHORTHOOD! I must see pictures. I hope the job is going well and a score like an old shorty makes it even better.

Re: Engine drive welders

All of them should run your everlast. My grandfather swore by hobart but that was way before miller bought them. I like my Lincoln engine drives. They all should work for your needs but i would try to run all of them before you buy and make your decision based off of that.

Re: Engine drive welders

The Hobart machine if i remember correctly doesn't run constant voltage for running a wire feeder. Other than that it is pretty much the same machine as the Bobcat. They run a crisp arc where as the Lincoln is a bit more on the buttery side witch i prefer. If you step up to a 250 or a 300 you can ge...

Re: .023 mig wire.

Its all sold by the pound so size in that aspect doesn't matter. A 11 pound spool of .023 will make the same amount of weld that an 11 pound spool of .030 will. The wire feed speed will be faster but that is all that will change. .023 is meant for thinner material but can be used on heavier stuff.

Re: convert a hobart s/g to a miller

Shouldn't be a problem. I think it should be two wires for the trigger that make the gun hot and provide gas flow and one current wire. I'm sure the gas hose could be plumbed in under the hood with a tee or a valve.

As a cheap compromise to the Ironman lookin thing above (its cool but probably $$$) Flip up torch goggles with a shade ten instead of the five work good. A bandanna around the face and a welding cap = good to go. Steve don't tell you management but it works with a hard hat too. If you tell them you ...
