4130 tube with no mill origin printed

The tubing has a rough, pitted surface finish after sanding off pickle coat. It is not rust, more like dry galling when it was pulled through the die or just bad materials? Welds nice. There is no mill or manufacture markings- only script TM-AMS 6336 OM AMS-T- 6736B. MIL-T-6736 4130 SMLS COND N 0.62...

Re: Best way to TIG this weldment

DGA pilot gets it spot on. Save but the full volkswagon power plant. The consensus is to put a .625" x . 065 wall CroMo square tube for load bearing member in tension. That will make a better weld at that junction. FEA shows almost 3 times strength needed for loads at max flight loads. Thanks t...

Re: Best way to TIG this weldment

Just wanted to see how others would take on the task...nothing more. This is my fourth aircraft from plans...not new to building solid planes. I have 4 engineers opinions and the local EAA chapter with me. I don't negatively impact others...hmmm. This place used to full of helpful ideas... Guess thi...

Re: Best way to TIG this weldment

No issues with anyone , no one being an arsehat... I do fly what I weld. I have no issues with that or making a sound weld. If you only knew what level of work that was signed off and flies over many heads at night.... Let's just say I have trust in my work. I was simply looking for some tips on &qu...

Best way to TIG this weldment

This is a strut attachment point on a 5/8 by .035 fuselage tube. The ones that were built back in the early 80s were mig welded and I'm not doing that if possible. Just wanted to know if there is any advice to get this welded up from the inside of those cross tubes with a TIG torch and do it in a sa...

Welding header tube and flange in stainless

:D I know my safety wire is composed of 18% chromium / 8% nickel {302 or 304} . I do like to weld thin materials with it. Question is how would it hold up on a header flange and tube in unknown grades of SS? Or would 309l be the natural safe go to? Going to make "step headers" - 1.375 to 1...

Skilled aluminum welds

I thought this was too nice not to post. At least I appreciated the skill here. A simple AC dryer made in the early 90's. Like to see the positioner they had. Every weld on this thing is like this. I was impressed as it cant be more than .050" after checking with thickness gauge .

Re: Thin aluminum thread #109983774888

As for the copper... I have a good friend that pulled some 480v change gear out of a building in town. This was the main power interrupt. He was able to keep all of the pieces. I have 1/2 and 5/8 thick plates bigger than your hand. Also have some 1.25 x 2 aluminum that machines really nice... hardne...

Re: Weld a SS bolt to 4130?

Welded a grade 5 plain- uncoated 1/4-28 bolt to this today. I cut a radius with a fly cutter so the head would lie flat on the curve of the .060" bracket. Tricky to stay small with a puddle and keep things going good.... still had a bit of push through on the back side after trying to keep amps...

Re: Weld a SS bolt to 4130?

I would love to do something like that...issue is that where the pulley bracket needs to go the main spar is where this plate gets riveted onto. No other holes allowed at that area. No back side access of anything.

Re: Weld a SS bolt to 4130?

Yes you are right... more airplane stuff. The pulley deflects a cable run of 25 or so degrees. Even calculating the load as a tangent force it would be less than 65 to 85 lds force at the rare moments it would see that kind of stress. Surely a factor of 4 for safety it would be secure.... plus it is...

Re: Weld a SS bolt to 4130?

The reason I wanted to use stainless is for Corrosion Protection and the pulley does have a sealed bearing. I'm just afraid of a Nas bolt being welded it has become very very brittle in the haz and I would expect it to break. Maybe I would be better off using a grade 5 quarter 28 shoulder Bolt and w...

Weld a SS bolt to 4130?

The question is I have a .062 4130 plate with a 8740 bolt that had been mig welded to it for a pulley to operate off of. I feel like this is going to be really brittle and a very weak weldment to say the least about it so I opted to investigate implementing a stainless steel bolt of 316 or 304 alloy...

I thought I had made a mistake with so much $ on one machine. I love mine- and can say it has helped me to be a better welder. As for the AC side of it is awesome.... its almost like it wants to weld. A lot left for me to explore yet on it though. :D

Welding on Aluminum heads

My mentor that has helped along my welding adventures said I would probably be well off to heat these casting to around 200 deg. F before lighting up on it. There is a plug that has to be welded into the opening...moved the intake port. You think the Dynasty 210 w/argon will deliver or do I need to ...

Re: Dynasty 210 DX - fan on often?

My machine doesn't run the fan on initial start up , but does stay in a low mode of "on" time like yours after welding. Kind of bugged me too. Interested to see if it is a bug issue with software or not...have not had much time to weld with it though...only a couple hours. Spent a lot of t...

Re: How to improve from here

Did use a pedal....did not cut plate down. I am trying to control the puddle and arc as much as I can...trying to figure out how to keep it very confined. I think I need to ditch this tungsten and get some 2% lanth. This seems to splinter and arc out the sides after a while at 60 amps or so even wit...

How to improve from here
