Re: Class D fire extinguishers

Burning magnesium is as bright as a welding arc. Steve S It's brighter in my opinion and Damn fast. Long time ago someone used my bench grinder on some mag part they thought it was aluminum. I used grinder next as soon I touched that piece of steel to wheel big bright whit flash erupted inside the ...

Re: Welding Rod Question

Great info. Oh, and BTW, challenge accepted! Thanks. Confused on the challenge part, do you mean about collecting tig rod to be able to weld anything. As far as the 318 tig rod it does exist. Do not know actual uses for it just googled it Lincoln PDF link http://www.lincolnelectric.com/as...

If you wouldn't get so rowdy when repairing cases, a fire extinguisher would be a non issue ;) Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk Not a matter of being rowdy just paranoia with old age I guess in case something out of the blue happens. Its some of the small mag parts that bother me the most. Figu...

Re: Welding Rod Question

here is some thoughts on using stainless to weld steel 1. can it be done=yes 2. should it be done=NO and yes :? DEPENDS what does this weld do? Your best bet is to match your base metal as best you can except when you have to use a different filler to achieve desired properties out of the weld. Best...

Thank you Airrj for the info i appreciate it. Especially from someone using the stuff to fight fires. That F500 stuff is pretty cool never heard of it. apparently it can be used in an extinguisher. Found a video where they show how to refill and charge an extinguisher with F500, however that video d...

Class D fire extinguishers

Want to add a class D extinguisher to shop just in case. Deal with magnesium cases and parts with would like to have something better then a bucket of sand. Unfortunately class D extinguishers cost a small fortune, but still cheaper then a fire out of control. Anyone have one in there shop curious a...

Re: Anyone use ER80S-D2 to weld 4130 Chromoly with?

adrynalinjunkie I suggest turning up heat in garage to 60 to 65 degrees several hours before you do your welding. General rule of thumb if air temperature is under 60 degrees warm the tubes up. If you warm tubes up instead of turning up thermostat just use a propane torch don't need anything extreme...

Re: Anyone use ER80S-D2 to weld 4130 Chromoly with?

ER70-S2 gives better elongation than ER80-D2. Most chassis builders in open wheel use ER70-S2 allows chassis to deform more as car takes multiple hits from flipping. Some do use ER80 either for certain areas or whole car. Your case either one will work just fine. don't burn up the metal and don't fo...

By open wheels do you mean sprint cars? There are three classes Midgets, Sprints, Champ Cars (Silver Crown they changed name but for us old racing families and old guys we still consider them champ cars) I don't consider minisprints as one of the classes they are not traditional and fairly new plus...

@greintime
Open wheel cars it's easier to come in from top of cage forget snaking threw side plus there was a midget and Sprint car driver that had one leg. He wore a device on upper part that was left it locked into special pedal built into car. Very good driver and hell of a nice guy.

I could not tell you exact alloy. I will offer what I would prolly do in your position. For cast aluminum I typically use 4043 for repairing engine cases, differentials, transmission cases and such. I find the added silicon in 4043 helps with the crude in the cases. I might preheat the whole thing i...

Anyone using the new Docol R8 tubing in place of 4130. I'm not totally sold on stuff curious if anyone has experience with it. If you don't know what it is this is a general idea of it, 4130 is a heavily alloyed metal that relies on different added metal to achieve the desired strength's and propert...

Re: Sandy textured aluminum tig weld... why? tig gurus help

I would bet your whole problem can be solved by arc length. Get that arc length small and tight and I bet it goes away. Long arc length equals more voltage which increases heat too. Do a couple of short welds concentrating on arc length if you think it's right you prolly are not close enough. Be car...

When ever anyone starts out on aluminum they want to baby it which as others stated is the wrong thing to do. Mash the peddle  you will get a puddle then will have to wash it over to other part. Which ever part has the best ground is the piece the arc will jump to. After puddle formed you nor...
