Re: Tube weld practice

Thanks! Cool project you are doing!

I've filled tubes with sand and bent them with an oxy/acetylene torch over a wooden buck before. Not pretty or elegant.

Re: tube welding and distortion

60amps?!

I'd either be blowing holes through the tube or be moving so fast it'd be crazy.

Guess I could try it. But I probably be 1/2 to 1/4 pedal the whole time.

Re: Tube weld practice

Coped tube welding is one heck of a complex weld. The change in angle is so marked as you weld. I'm no expert by any stretch but one thing that helped me was to think about the joint in distinct parts. The right angle side is a fillet weld. The flat side is a lap weld. Subtle differences in where yo...

Re: tube welding and distortion

I do a lot of work with pie cuts. They are out of stainless, aluminum and titanium. Best advice I can give that will speed up the learning curve are. Fit up. Make sure your edges are straight and true. Make sure they are flat and round as well. The thinner the wall thickness the less chance you hav...

Re: tube welding and distortion

Pardon my ignorance, but why not use bent segments instead of pie pieces to make a bend? Mandrel bends usually come in only one or two bend radii for a given tube diameter. My particular tube diameter sized for the engine was a less often used 1 3/8". This only came in a single bend radius. Wi...

Re: tube welding and distortion

Thanks for the tips. The section you see welded above was my first try at it. As a less experienced welder, I have a tendency to over feed the wire fearing I'm going to burn through or lose control of the puddle. The rest of the header tube was welded with less wire and the beads looks less prominen...

tube welding and distortion

Hello, Follow up question to my earlier exhaust welding topic. I finished tacking up the pie cut pieces and welded one of the headers tubes. The distortion was much greater than I anticipated even though I was careful to skip weld and distribute them on the length of the tube and alternate sides. Th...

Re: Pulsing and tube welding

Yeah. that's what I thought. Maybe his pulser only goes up that high? I'm getting ready to weld up a pie cut motorcycle exhaust and was researching what weld settings might help. I think I'll pulse but at the 150-200pps range. Fit up is good for the most part but I just feel more comfortable adding ...

Pulsing and tube welding

Can some of you experts take a look at this video and comment on the pulsing frequency?

https://youtu.be/uPDBWjl6PBI

I think he's welding thin gauge titanium.

He has a bunch of pics on instagram that are amazing.

Just wondering about the rather slow rate of pulsing and if it meant anything.

I love the fact that you show your perfect welds and your not so perfect welds. (Although those look pretty ok, too) The perfectly stack dimes you see on weldporn and the like are pretty to look at and aspire to, but I learn so much more watching what works and more importantly what doesn't and why....

Re: Tungsten Sharpeners

I have one. It's nice having it by the bench where I can lean over and grab it and freshen up the tungsten if I wanted and be back to welding in less than 30 seconds. Maybe not $300 worth. $235 at htp, maybe?

Perfect fit up. Likely a fusion weld with little to no filler added. Correct amps and penetration.

I remember Jody has a nice video about outside corner welds on some thin material.

appreciate of the input. the frame is mild steel. I've read pre heating the chrome-moly tube over a certain thickness is important, too. All the tubing braces were both sanded and wiped down with toluene inside and out. The frame that I was welding to could not be prepped on the inside. Outside was ...

Re: blowing out when welding tube

This doesn't help you now, but on future projects drill vent holes into the tube that is being covered by your coped tube. To address your question, I would prefer to drill a small vent hole in a less stressed area and close up the weld. drill the hole right in the center of the covered part? That'...

blowing out when welding tube

I know it's been covered before, but I was wondering if you could just stop short of welding completely around a tube joint to prevent the puddle from being blown out. Instead of drilling a brand new hole somewhere else. My project is frame bracing for an old 70's motorcycle. 7/8" and 1" 0...

Re: Tube welding- looking to get to the next level?

Hmmm. I'd like to know if Zank pulses with the foot to get those results. Seems that you don't pulse to get that result on a straight weld, doing it on a tube weld is like cheating. But I am an ignorant newb. Lol. Not even all of ztfab tube welds look like Zank's. not at all saying they were inferio...
