Re: can you convert a oxyacetylene torch for propane use

Hello all, checked with the local tractor supply store and they have a exchange program where if you purchase the o2 tank from them, you can do an exchange. they don't do refills or accept outside tanks. I saw on ebay where I can purchase a much larger tank cheaper but it comes empty. the info says ...

Re: Which welder for a new student

Welcome to the forums! Since your son is starting school and since this is a machine to practice on, I'd suggest an AC/DC stick welder, such as a Lincoln "Tombstone" or Miller Thunderbolt. You can find them for sale used, generally at a good price, and they're generally so simple they are ...

First, good on ya for developing your own bike, and good on ya for learning to weld! I'm trying to visualize how this armor plating works. The first post in this thread says you plan to bolt as many as 26 of these onto the bike to protect the tube from punctures. Where and how will these bolt on? Ju...

Re: a spacer bar mild steel wont weld to

I remember seeing copper spacers on huge automated OA cutting machines. Have you priced different materials ? It may come down to "how long it lasts" vs. "how much it costs", and finding a happy medium.

I'm wondering if you need a new liner, or if it's time to clean out the current one. How old is the welder, and have you ever changed or cleaned the liner?

Re: Lead welding using TIG

Welcome to the forums. I'd suggest joining the lead sheets however they are *typically* joined, and according to local codes if they apply. That way whoever is the next guy up on the roof- possibly a contractor, possibly not you- will be able to figure it out, and will be able to use his equipment o...

Re: Helium bottle to argon?

Any interest in keeping the helium, for aluminum TIG? Your LWS may let you swap it for an argon bottle of the same size, assuming it's an "owner bottle" and not a rental size bottle. Best to call and find out first, because LWS procedures vary by region and provider. They may require you t...

Re: ESAB EMP 215

The EMP215 can weld hard wire MIG (GMAW) or flux cored wire (FCAW), so you'll need to set the machine's polarity to match your process. FCAW is electrode negative, GMAW is electrode positive. The owner's manual will describe how to change polarity.

Good luck with it, let us know how it goes!

Hey, welcome to the forums! The MSDS for Radnor e3 electrodes says they are ~1.5% lanthanated. I think the electrode review in that video comparison covered 1.5 lanth, if i recall correctly.

Don't you think someone will notice if all the fire hydrants in town are suddenly gone? I'm sure the fire department would have a thing or two to say about it. :-)

Nothing from the OP in nearly a week. What's the reason for removing fire hydrants, i wonder?

Re: PCB Repair or..?

That machine absorbed a nasty shock in order for that board to break that way. Who knows, your solder connection may have fixed the board, but the impact shock may have damaged other vital components. Or, that machine may have been DOA before the board broke. A repair technician would be able to tel...

Re: Argon regulator

Yes, you can get an adapter to connect your argon regulator (cga 540) to a co2 bottle (cga 320). Make sure you get a nylon or teflon gasket to help seal.

I've heard the regulator may ice up at high co2 flow rates.

Good luck with it! I picked up a co2 bottle for MIG too, but haven't used it yet.

To determine a value, you might check EBay for "completed transactions" on this lathe. That would give you an approximation of what the market feels is the value of the machine. Hopefully you can strike a good deal. The web has many entries on "what to look for in a used lathe" s...

Reluctant to join the thread because i'm so far out of my depth. Would it be practical to add a normally closed foot switch to the ground cable? Stomp the switch to interrupt the ground, arc stops but gas keeps flowing.

I'm guessing 1/8" plate/wall thickness could be welded, but anything thinner I might eat up? Good guess! Clearly, you know where your towel is. :-) You can use a 1/8" rod on 1/8" material but you'll need to turn amps way down. According to this chart http://www.islandsupplywelding.co...

Any kind of makerspace or hackerspace you could join? Or did you look into that when you looked for co-op machining clubs.
