Re: WTF am i doing wrong: TIG mild steel

You did a lot wrong. Not cleaning correctly is a mistake. Buying "mild steel oxy filler rod" for tig is an obvious one :D RG45 rods are not made like tig rods. With good clean steel the weld will often be very gray. Same for coat hangers. In 70s-2 and 70s-6 tig rods, the -2 and -6 are sil...

WTF am i doing wrong: TIG mild steel

Need some help people .... I am a hobby welder but I have welded a lot of SS and Al with TIG .. and although not an expert by any means I can lay dropped pennies with regularity in most situations. Previously when I had to weld plain steel I turned to the MIG ... its easy, fast and clean ... turn on...

Re: Whats The Point of Pulse Greater than AC Freq ?

EDIT of EDIT and I just found another tutorial about DC welding of stainless using high pulse rates to get less distortion of low thermal conductivity metals for critical work .... so the answer is: DC voltage doesn’t change polarity. Polarity frequency is different than pulse frequency. yes thats ...

Re: Whats The Point of Pulse Greater than AC Freq ?

Still some question remains regarding the usefulness of the configuration OP presents. Perhaps it depends on the time constant for puddle melt/solidification such that you could reduce overall heat input but still benefit from the peak current input? I am sure there are scenarios where a very high ...

Re: Whats The Point of Pulse Greater than AC Freq ?

Your using the same measure to reference two different things. Pulse generally refers to high and low amps( relationship is in frequency of times between highs and lows). Frequency of the AC is in reference to the actual sine wave of the electricity. Nope I'm not ... as you can see from the diagram...

Whats The Point of Pulse Greater than AC Freq ?

Hi,

I have an AC/DC machine which has a fixed AC frequency of 60Hz but also has pulse capability of 300Hz and AC balance control.

While I understand the principle of pulse and AC balance whats the point of having a pulse frequency greater than the AC frequency as per the attached pic??

Re: Pure Argon or Argon/CO2/Oxygen for SS MIG

My adventures with solid wire ss it that its very finicky with the settings. Sometimes its great, but then sometimes it was horrible. I've seen a guy do the most fantastic looking welds, and then another guy lay pus on the same machine. Mine was one an old pulse machine with auto wire setting so it...

Re: Pure Argon or Argon/CO2/Oxygen for SS MIG

Just wanted to post my experience with using the Ar/CO2/O2 mix with stainless: 1: had to use higher voltage than expected 2: wire is very stiff, so keep your gun lead straight 3: with mild steel can clamp to the bench, but with stainless worked much better with clamp on material! 4: could achieve sp...

Re: Handy MIG Reel Adapter from Scrap

Very nice. I think I have to cut down to five kilo rolls on my old mig. The old girl doesnt like towing wire off the heavy 15 kg roll. Yeah I did that but got bored and decided to make something I didn't have to wind into :-) On a side note, how do you find the boss weld stuff? Hmm lets just say it...

Handy MIG Reel Adapter from Scrap

Hi, I have one of those MIGS which takes the bigger 5kg reels but has no built in adapter for the small reels and I had a small job to do in Stainless which I usually do with TIG but this is a painful and awkward job so I wanted to try SS MIG but didn't want to buy a 5kg roll of SS. So I made the ab...

Thanks for this thought. I decided to use a 309 cos I was a little worried about the filler corroding and it has enough Ni to still give a little flex.

Re: Filler Material to plug hole in wheel rim?

I may be over simplifying this, but why not just put a valve stem in that hole also. Unfortunately not! The hole was on the outer surface of the rim and pointed outwards. As this is a 4WD truck the stems need to be inside and pointed inwards otherwise they would get ripped out the next time we went...

Re: Filler Material to plug hole in wheel rim?

If you are not sure how to weld it, drill and tap for a small tapered pipe plug - use loctite and done deal. Don't you hate it when someone thinks laterally ..... Probably not enough bite at 4mm to use a tapered one but why not just a round headed bolt with proper high pressure sealant. It would wo...

Re: Filler Material to plug hole in wheel rim?

Kinda off subject, but if the wheel sees anything but low speed, it will be off balance like crazy. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk This does see highway speeds of 130km/h but the rim and tyre weigh ~85kg (no that's not a typo 85kg!) and balance weights can be 200+g so the few grams of the bo...

Re: Filler Material to plug hole in wheel rim?

MIG, TIG, Stick, Or Gas? I'd use a grade 8 bolt sawed off as long as your wheel is thick, and TIG with Hastelloy W. Be aware that some vehicle applications you are not allowed to weld on wheels at all. I don't know what your wheels are made of, (hence the Hastelloy W) I scrapped some truck wheels, ...

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply. Definitely TIG. The wheels are steel and huge! The centres are 12mm plate steel and the rim band is 4mm folded plate. The centre is submerged arc welded to the rim band. The "mistake" hole is in the band and well away from the centre plate/band seam. I am go...

Thanks for all the suggestions people, I will set up and try them today. Just out of interest when you are doing fillets do you use a bigger cup and rest it on the material so you have a consistent arc length (see quick diagram attached) or do you prop the cup away from the corner? Hi, I have a Thermadyne 186 AC/DC welder and have pretty good success with everything except fillet welds in on Al. I can weld the butts and laps very nicely but have had no success with the fillets.
