Re: new to welding

The flux core I buy is .030, made by Lincoln. I can break off a piece fairly easy by hand, it doesn't like to bend.

Re: Scratch Start Parameters using 115V Inverter Stick Welde

Just thought of a question, why the lower voltage for tig? The reason I ask is I use a Old Lincarc 250 at work and my go to voltage for most scratch start tig work is 50volts, I can't remember right off but I don't think it even goes down under 30volts.

Re: Back Purge

@Braehill I checked my normal go to, metalsdepot.com, if you can't find what you are looking for you can get 1'x1'x.032 brass for about $35. But you would still have to drill the holes in it.

Re: new to welding

I want to add I still have my first welder, Lincoln WeldPak HD. I believe it's 80amp, 110v, fluxcore only. I've learned having the machine set correctly, correct gun angle, stickout, and technique can get very surprising results out of a small machine. Depending on what your welding, some preheat ca...

Re: new to tig welding

Im not seeing holes when no filler was added, unless I'm missing it. If you are getting holes with no filler, find some new clean steel to practice on. If there is only holes when filler is added, I have to ask what is stamped on the rod? You may not have tig filler. If it is tig filler, gas coverag...

Re: Welding 4130 Chromoly

Probably not going to be able to do it anytime soon but I would like to practice some 4130. With the different options that have been discussed, how much pre and post heat should be used? It will probably be quite a while before I can do it but would like to weld several joints to see how they hold ...

Re: Welding 4130 Chromoly

I like welding aluminum as well, although I rarely get the opportunity to weld straight aluminum. The aluminum i weld is what makes up the inner diameter of engine bearings. It has silicates, tin, and a lot more added to it. Then is heat treated before we weld coils end to end.

Re: Welding 4130 Chromoly

I still have a lot of learning to do and don't feel comfortable welding 4130, from what ive come across in research, to have my dad going down the drag strip trusting evey weld in the chassis. I am however comfortable using mild steel, which is what the chassis kit is made of that I planned to use. ...

Re: new to tig welding

Like greintime said, thickness of material and what joint your welding is a big missing piece of the puzzle. Without that there's not much we can say. Also post pictures, that helps a ton also!

Re: Welding 4130 Chromoly

Even before reading the responses on this thread I've never had a desire to weld a 4130 tube chassis or roll cage. This is because of apparently how easy it is to weaken the material. That being said, I'm wondering if there are multiple ways to correctly weld 4130. Possibly tig with er70-s2 with no ...

Re: Scratch Start Parameters using 115V Inverter Stick Welde

Id say you can tig with any stick and stick with any tig, as long as it is a transformer bared machine, or the insurer based circuitry allows it. As for the op, check Craigslist, if you can't find anything and just want to get some arc time. Get the most expensive/highest quality tig machine you can...

Re: X-ray welds = automatically great welder??

I will add that just because someone had welded for 10 or 20 years or more, doesn't mean they know what they are doing! Alternatively, just because someone has only welded a year or two doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing. The reason I say this is where I work, production, we try not to...

Re: Welding 4130 Chromoly

I will start off saying that I am not a professional welder. I've learned everything I know first hand and a lot of Internet research. That being said, IF, I was to weld 4130, i would not use preheat. I would use er70-s2, and for tubing, holes would be drilled at joints to let expanding gases move f...

Re: At home welding certification

I've got to see what my dad wants to do still. He hasn't made up his mind if he wants to make some changes to his current car, or build a new one. If he decides to build a new one, he said he will wait until the new year. My next step will be getting in contact with someone that certifies chassis/ro...

Re: What I welded today....

Not being familiar with horses, .....what is a horseshoe made out of? Is it just some soft mild steel? Does it weld pretty easily? Most are mild steel, some cast iron, and some aluminum. The ones I deal with are mild steel, tig can be a pain sometimes because of "stuff" deep into the meta...

Re: At home welding certification

I'll have to look it up, but for the e.t. That the car would be running, mostly just visual I believe. From what I found it says mig or tig by a approved process and no grinding of welds is allowed! I'll definitely look into it some more but for where we race, any welds I put down should be fine. To...

So it was mentioned in this thread about horseshoe art, and was wondering what any of you would charge/pay for this. Also let me also apologize since these are not mig. Horseshoes tig welded in a v, drilled and tapped to be mounted on a stained and lacquered board inlayed for each horseshoe. Again s...
