Re: Where to buy 4943 filler rod
Airbags local store ordered 10# for me, total including tax and the ever present 'HazMat' surcharge was around $73. Took 5-7 days to come in, no ship charge. [basically, Airgas will add hazmat surcharge to almost everything, other than power tools and welders. Kickin' and screaming about this, ustah...

Re: Polaris Aluminum Transmission Housing
If the DC background can be on, without any pulsing, do so. You'll need max. heat input. Pulsing reduces heat input. Can and should preheat with the torch, even if separately warming part up first-which helps. Play the torch up and down the cracked area to be tacked...to get it close to 'heat', whil...

I want to start practicing Tig on some aluminum. I have to go see what the shop has for a tig machine but my question for now is I have some scrap aluminum. Not sure what grade it is but I am in a aviation maintenance unit so most likely 6061. So would I just use 6061 filler material or does that d...

Ya I went and got a 300 temp stick and 400 temp stick so I don't go over interpass temp, cause I will have to do 2 passes. They are 4 link bars, not horribly critical but still want to do it right. My concern about post heated that hot is distorting the threads. I disassembled the Hiem joint so I d...

Hi, welcome to the forum. First of all don't run off onto the pipe, it will definitely be considered stray arc strike and fail visual. It's ok to have a fish eye as long as the crater has no depth to it. Often you finish and what you think is a fish eye is actually standing a little proud. As you r...

Why are you using lanthiated rather than ceriated or thoriated for DC?
IMHO lanthiated works great for AC, but prefer ceriated/thoriated for DC.

use an AL backer and let it be part of the shell, if at all possible. A larger mass copper, etc. heat sink block will help--but you'll need to immediately cool down with water spray and air blow off to stop distortion. Pics would say much, as others have mentioned. Need to find out at least the basi...

Re: Help with Scale/Porosity problem
A picture of the actual problem would detail much more than you've actually said and eliminate having to guess at what's going on. Did you sand or grind the steel, then acetone wipe? At the end of the weld bead is there a 'suck hole' a.k.a.--'crater'? This is caused by abruptly stopping the arc, rat...

Well it might not be stainless, I just assumed it was as he told me it was, how can I check? I just ran a magnet over it and the magnet sticks pretty solid, unlike the stainless keg I have, which only mildly attracts the magnet. So I'm guessing not stainless? And as for the possible coating, I did ...

mystery of the white/brown ring
First post, so go easy. I recently bought myself a 200A AC/DC inverter TIG welder, for various uses around my workshop. I've always had a MIG, but never a TIG and have never welded TIG until now. Anyway, I had some stainless tube lying around ... the stainless tube always ended up with a white/brow...
