Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair

Nice save! I've only done the one cast iron job so far (alum bronze) but I've done several cast aluminum ones that were dirty from years of use - so I feel your frustration on this one :) Yeah this was a royal nightmare. I have had alot of success with brazing but this piece just wasn't having it. ...

Zoomed the pic for a closer look. I recon there is little chance the chassis is not out of alignment. I don't think cut-bash-reweld will fix it strength for safety or geometrically. You need to replace that section on a chassis table. Good answer Coldie. Not to change the subject...just curious...d...

My dad was in the Navy and was at the Operation Crossroads Able and Baker atom bomb tests at Bikini. He towed the ships that were part of the test into place and loaded the decks with the animals that were also part of it. I showed him some YT videos of the blasts when he was in the hospital before ...

No matter how you pronounce it, it's only spelled one way! Well yeah but potato and potaaato(sorry it's the best I could do)are spelled the same when actually written out but certain people pronounce them differently. Same with vase and vaaz(again sorry). Is there like levels or is it just who care...

Hey Chips....damn the torpedos and keep welding. I'm glad you are pretty good natured about taking criticism. I try to build people up, not tear them down when they are seeking support. I wish we lived near each other so I could help you along. You WILL get to where you want to go and the most impor...

Re: PITA Cast Iron Repair

That came out really good. I notice most of the openings are taped shut, did you use a purge on the backside? No Mark, that was for leak testing. I wasn't able to pressure test it but my friend came over and picked it up and was going to put on back on the boat last night and test it and said he wo...

I'll be a dissenting vote, that's still pretty terrible Are you sure they're pretty terrible? Maybe they're just somewhat terrible. Take a close look. As for graininess, they are not shiny. I don't know what they should look like. I've never seen a good mild steel TIG weld in person. The metal was ...

Re: Weld Load

The 70 is 70k pounds per sq in of pressure at the max and if done with no deformities or weld errors? (Might be wrong but that is my understanding.) HUH? 70 K is tensile strength. ;) Try again That's why I said that's my understanding and I may be wrong...so I thank you all for straightening it out...

Re: Tig with/without filler

Try AL without filler once. ;) Don't worry-tacks without filler I have done a few times and found out real quick why not to. Got an inch into a butt joint and I heard a pop and about half way down it turned into a lap joint. T-joint on aluminum I wouldn't do but if it wasn't critical outside corner...

Re: Tig with/without filler

I remember hearing a couple times that tig without filler is weaker than with filler. Why is this? Is the no filler lacking reinforcement or is there something else going on? Or am I just crazy and misheard it? You answered your own question. Of course filler adds reinforcement. Are you selling any...
