Failed FCAW tests for lack of fusion

I took a 2G and 3G test on 1/2" carbon steel with a backing plate and failed both of them for lack of fusion (tested via Xray). I didn't get any more details than that. I was running .045 dual shield wire with 75/25 gas at around 40 cfh. For the 2G test I was at 25.3 V, 280 IPM and 195-207 amps...

Tips on passing Tig 2G SS weld test, xray

I have a weld test Thursday and was given the opportunity to practice the test just to know what to expect. It is 1/4" stainless steel with backing bar in the 2g position, 1/8" gap, 15 degree bevel on each piece, Tig welded, probably will be given 1/16" filler rod (308?). When I took ...

Haha, I'm not deadlifting 900! I just wanted to see how easily the jack would move a loaded bar and I couldn't fit any more than 10 plates on the end.

My first useful weld project, deadlift jack

I spent probably 3 hours total on this. I guess someone who knew what they were doing could have it done in a little over an hour. To match the round tubing contour to the square tubing I traced the contour with a scribe, cut slots with a cutoff wheel up to the scribe mark, then ground I all out wit...

Learning to tig, looking for feedback

I am learning to tig and posting this to get feedback. At first I was thinking I would just post pictures of what I thought was decent stuff (relative to my skill), but then decided I would just post a majority of what I weld. So expect some ugly looking stuff. Aluminum fillet weld. This one I was a...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

What are those ugly little things hanging onto the bottom of that last pic you posted? Surely you are able to eliminate those ? I was starting my stringers on the backing plate so that is where the weld transferred from overhead (doesn't seem like the right term?) to vertical. Unless you mean the t...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

I went and preheated the test piece to around 250 degrees, which I hadn't done prior. I noticed no matter how dialed in I felt I had the machine the first weld I layed always had slag that couldn't be easily chipped off. This time there was a slight peeling to the slag of the first weld. The more I ...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

I can't pull pictures off of my phone to post. I about ran out of flux core and it has been on backorder for a few weeks so I started using outershield, Lincoln's 71 M. This stuff I can lay vertical stringers with very easily, I can't with the flux core (Lincoln NR 211 I think). I had a test piece a...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

Any criticisms? The one piece has slag inclusion. I used a wire wheel to clean up my weld, next time I will run a grinder down the toe of the welds. The one piece that looks undercut is. I will probably weld up three more test pieces and if they go well then do one for a certification. Hopefully tom...

Re: 3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

I am using Lincoln Electric's 00.45" flux core, I think it is NR-11 or NR-211. On 3/8" plate I was running the first 2 passes at 21 V and 300 IPM and would drop to 20.4 V and 300 IPM. All three passes at 21 V was too hot and I would have the puddle run down the test piece. I set up a 1&quo...

3G Flux Core, 1" plate test

Anyone have any resources for doing a 3G 1" test plate with flux core. I have bent 5 3/8" plate coupons that were all nearly flawless. I am far better at weaving than running stringers and am not sure I can weave a large gap. Could I weave a covering pass on 1" plate. I guess it would...

New guy

I am 34 and think I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. Actually, at this point in life it is what I am going to do whether I want to or not. I am halfway through a 10 month welding school and trying to learn all I can. I am from Ohio, Wayne/Ashland county area.
