Re: boat propeller welding

The problem with repairing boat props. is the balancing act at the end. The prop has to be perfectly balanced or it will damage the seals of the outdrive and could eventually damage internal gears. Final calibration is essential to proper performance. Hope this helps.

Re: welding thick plate on top of existing plate.

Hi, I have done alot of repair work on masts and buckets and undersides of excavators and bulldozers. These machines come in with cracks on the main structures. First, I clean the parts well with solvent and grind all paint and rust off exposing the metal. Depending on the part to be repaired, I cut...

Re: Looking into getting a welder.

Hi, Personally, I think you might be better off with a stronger unit, 20% duty cycle is not so good unless you plan to sit around waiting for the unit to cool down often . Also might want something that can weld thicker than 1/8, you never know, more is always better. But again, if you're just tacki...

Re: tacking problems

Make sure the material is clean ( you can use a stainless wirebrush)and set your argon to 15 . Also make sure the tip of your electrode is not contaminated . I use a piece of copper and run the tip on that until I get a nice ball on the end.

Re: tacking problems

When you are just tacking, there is not enough heat for the right amount of time to create a weld without it cracking. The best thing to do for this is to preheat the part with a propane torch for 1/8 aluminium. When the part starts to create a little smoke, then you can tack the part with a little f...

Argon tank scam and more

O.K, Everytime I go pick up a tank of argon, when I hook up I notice that the total pressure varies from bottle to bottle, but the tank is never completely full. They came out with these new gauges incorporated on the top of the tank. It has a red bar on it , then a full green bar, a small space and...

Re: What torch to use?

Hi, You can pick up a new watercooled torch that liquid air or any welding supply shop can get you ( 25 feet of cable). A 300 amp water cooled torch will set you back about 235.00 bucks, but it should fit onto the contactor block located at the output terminal of the machine. If not, a block for the...

There is a pickling agent that is sold at a welding supply store that removes the discoloration.

welding with argon

This topic is a reminder to those of you who are welding in poorly ventilated areas. When welding with argon, be sure to have a fan nearby or even better, a fume collector to pull the argon away from you . This gas is extremely dangerous, can cause lung collapse and respiratory problems. As a matter...

Re: Problems welding 1/4 in. aluminum

I agree, increase the angle to 45 degrees, and fill that up. Leave the tungsten about 1/8 inch sticking out for that pass. For the inside pass, reset the tungsten to stick out enough to have it about 1/4 inch from the surface, and do the pass with filler rod, but reduce the current to minimise vibra...

Re: Dry Cut Cut Off saw

Hi Guys, O.K, the little bandsaw you posted will simply not work well. It's more like a toy, 1/2 hp motor is really not strong enough to do a good job, and the blades are really flimsy. Might be good for small work, little tubes .The cold cut ( dry cut) saw is very fast, the blades produce a clean c...

Try pushing the weld instead of dragging. This will make a big difference. Follow forward with the torch you'll have no problems .

Re: Dry Cut Cut Off saw

Hi, I use a Bianco bandsaw with an 96inch bi-metal blade which is excellant for production work. Small burr on the bottom of the cut. I also use a ridgid cold cut saw, 1450 rpm with a tungsten carbide tipped blade, excellant for tubing up to 4 inches in diameter, and I have even cut solid 4 inch mil...

Re: Mig puddle observation obscurity

Hi Dave, Wish I could be next to you when you do a pass. My screen goes from 5 to 12, set to 7 unless I do some heavy current welding. Just keep practicing I would think. How about if you adjust the wire speed, increase it maybe a little so the wire projects a little further outward. This might make...

Re: About argon tanks

I checked with air liquid, they don't purge the returns, so they said that there is either water from condensation that accumulates and small amounts of other stuff. Over time, this does build up in the tank, when the overall pressure gets too low, bingo, shitty welds, unpure argon.

That looks like a piece of cast something, the way the right side looks, like it was broken off of something. Could be the problem.

Hi,

Get a rag and wet it. Evrytime you do a weld ( make a 1/2 inch pass everytime) cool the weld with the rag. Tack, cool, tack, cool.... the corners won't turn up. Hope this helps.

Re: Mig puddle observation obscurity

Hi, I tilt the torch to about 15 degrees ( left handed) and drag to the left with my head on the far right , up close and can see the weld puddle nicely. If I push, it's the same, 15 degrees, push with my head tilted to the right close up. Maybe your electronic mask setting is too high. You may want...

Re: general metal identification

For stainless steel 304 or 316, there is a test you can do to see which is which. If you grind 0n 304 , the sparks will vanish in mid air, 316 the sparks will fly to the floor and continue rolling. If you have a magnet, stainless steel will not stick to it . Hot rolled steel usually has a black crus...

Some welding machines have 120 vac outlets located on the front panels. Some of these outlets supply power when the unit is turned on so the cooler will come on when the welder is turned on.

You might also want to check your overall tank pressure, if it's too low, get a fresh tank. Low tank pressure= crappy welds, especially on aluminum.

About argon tanks

Hi to all, Here is a discovery I have made over the years of tig welding , something I would like to share with you all. I have noticed that when the argon tank is low( 200lbs or less) there is a contamination in the gas. The bottom of the tank holds alot of crap after being refilled over a period o...
