Re: Advice welding contaminated Inconel
These are the pans that I have to weld. This is what it looks like ground down, barley gets to bare metal, which seems to hardly make a difference anyways. And this is pretty much what the beads look like at best... So far the only way I have been able to run beads is in very short runs. Go maybe a...

Re: Stainless Steel guys... step on in
Stainless steel is red-hot when it's formed and worked at the foundry. It amazes me that people think it's bad to get it hot again. Surface oxides are the only thing to control, and that's done with the atmosphere it's in, or the post-treatment if there is material to sacrifice. I regularly silver-...

Re: A little something I found
Found this little gem at the used book store. Looks like it was the classroom text book for Hobart welding school. There is no copywrite date in it, but from some dates that appear in the text it seems to be from the late 40's or early 50's. There was also a machinery's handbook from 1952 but I tho...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Lately most of my welding is removing broken bolts or taps. Welding is also one of the easiest ways to remove valve seats from a cylinder head. I must say that I would not have attempted the bolts before viewing Jody's video, and the tap would have been sent to the EDM shop. Although, I have been r...

Re: Experimental Airplane Frame with Ti tube frame
The main question is, how feasible is it to properly shield welds on something this big made of Ti. We can't exactly build a hazmat tent around it flooded with argon. Would back purging sections with a trailing cup be sufficient? how can you back-purge internal tubing sections with an external trai...

Re: Stainless Steel guys... step on in
I'm sure Otto will bring better info, but in the small area of expertise, ss is usually welded, I can't say I have seen a silver solder join. There has to be a reason for that. My coworker is using the silver solder due to the ease of repair and his level of skill with a welder. I weld them up with...

Re: Stainless Steel guys... step on in
I'd like too know too. I have to silver solder copper tube into 316 stainless steel connections to plate heat exchangers from time to time and you have to heat the 316 to red to get the solder to do its proper run thing. I have always wondered what damage if any was happening. That's why when I bra...

Re: Cleaning rust off of 304L stainless steel
Well, all good information for me, since I had thought that a SS wheel would be useful to knock the rust and hopefully the remaining non-SS off of the surface. As for my experience, I typically have been working with various carbon steel variants, not on SS, so I have to work on immediately surface...

Thanks for the feedback. The article is a good resource, so thanks ldbtx. I probably should have started this post with 3 statements and a question. 1) I have never welded Ti. 2) I have designed and welded many role cages and other frames for that try to stay close to the ground at speed, but never...

Re: Welder's nose?
Oddball question, issue. I mainly do TIG welding (or at least attempts, just a hobbyist) But after welding for a bit I get a smell stuck in my nose. Not a horrible smell, but certainly not bacon. Ideas? Not sure if a fan is a good idea (don't want blow away the shield) What metal are you welding? A...

Re: Experimental Airplane Frame with Ti tube frame
Strictly speaking, welding Ti is not difficult (I have done a lot of Ti welding for GE and Pratt Whitney aircraft components). However the attention to cleanliness and proper gas shielding is key. Yet many paragraphs could be written about these few words. I won't try to go further then what has alr...

Re: Cleaning rust off of 304L stainless steel
What's the best way to get rust off of 304L stainless steel? Somebody at work cleaned all the welds on a conveyor with a steel wire brush in a drill, and now everything he cleaned is rusted. Depending on how much you have to do, and how long it's been there would be good to know. If it's recent the...

I built four "dual flowmeters" like that $110 unit, for a fraction of the cost.
Every TIG machine at my work has a dual flowmeter so we can back-purge and weld from one bottle.
It's cheap and easy.

I tested the flow without the torch in the mix and it was fine, so it seems like the reduction in the flow is consistent with the torch itself. I have been using it and did not 320amp passes. Torch got warm but was plenty cool to continue working so I think the flow seems to be fine. Thanks for the...
