Re: One good thing about being a welder...eclipses!

The full eclipse was spectacular in Casper, WY! I have seen partial ones before, and it is cool to see through the welding helmet, but for the 2 minutes that it was full eclipse was amazing. Photos just don't do it justice. Next one is in 2024 from TX to New England. Catch it if you can.

Re: Hobart Handler 210 Voltage

JP, I have the same machine and I have been thinking about doing the same thing, but I haven't had time to get to it yet. If you are willing to share your wire feed info, I will try to get the voltage data this week. Being married to an electrical engineer has its advantages. Give me a few days and ...

Re: some advice please

I did mine which was a 3/8" hook with the same machine and wire, and I did do a cover pass on mine. The fillet on the 3/8" hook was just too large to fill with a single pass. Worked great, and I use them all the time for picking stuff.

I always have four items in my pockets that come in very handy. Pen and Sharpie, as well as my 'Green Brain' which is a pocket notebook that has all of my chicken scratch in it. Also I carry a 3' tape which I use allot. For the shop I use dial calipers all of the time. I started out as a machinist, ...

Was going to signup for the NYC CNC open house next Friday, found out they expect about 500 people! I can imagine standing room only, I can't imagine they even have parking for that many, tried to see the place on Google Maps but there isn't a street view available. I know Roy and Jonathan will be ...

Re: Angle iron miter mig welding

I have built around 15 different stands out of 1" or 1.5" 11gauge angle and I have done both coped and mitered, and for the strength of the 11 gauge (1/8") material I don't find that the extra time to cope the material is worth it. I use a carbide chop saw to miter the corners. On the...

Re: Gas cylinder volumes

Arno, That is a very cool design. One thing that I looked for and couldn't find was what is the lifespan on the GENIE cylinders. I am not familiar with the European testing requirements for high pressure cylinders, but the US DOT requires regular hydro-static testing, and on the Kevlar wrapped 4500 ...

but my aluminum scuba tanks are over 3000 PSI of dry air. What limits the pressure a supplier is willing to go to for a particular gas? Your aluminum SCUBA tanks were originally designed for the 3000 psi rating. SCBA tanks (firefighting) are often 4500 psi, but again they were designed and built fr...

Re: anyone using 3" ROLOC style flap disks?

I have used these a bunch in a friends shop on auto body work. Where you really don't want much heat in the metal. They seem to run a bit cooler and last longer than the flat ROLOC discs. And I have had the same issue with them coming off if you decelerate too quickly. Not something that I use all o...

I used AR400 for teeth on a compact diesel tractor backhoe. The operator was digging through decomposed granite, so they would wear out any other teeth. At the time I only had access to a stick welder and very few other tools. The teeth were made out of 1/4"x2" bar and they were 5" lo...

I found some good fire nerd reading tonight. http://fire.nist.gov/bfrlpubs/fire98/PDF/f98052.pdf I didn't read the thing cover to cover, but the magnesium section was an interesting read. The biggest problem with any type of sand is the level of moisture in the sand. The fine silica sand that Steve ...

Yes, A class D extinguisher is going to be an arm and a leg to buy, but they are invaluable in the case of a D fire. I have not looked into D extinguisher maintenance before, but it is all covered in NFPA 10 which is the standard for all extinguishers. I did find an owners manual for a D extinguishe...

I have been very happy with my DeWalt DW872 Carbide chop saw. I have had it about 9 months now and I have made around 250 cuts with it with no noticeable deterioration of the blade. Most of my work in 11 ga tubing, so I can't give you a feel for heavier cuts. I am not married to DeWalt, it was the b...

Thanks. The are becoming much more cost effective rapidly. My neighbor installed them 8 years ago and per watt we paid 10% of what he did. In just 8 years. Also, 90% of the system was manufactured in the US or Canada.
