Re: NEW To Aluminum Welding

I would recommend a machine with adjustable balance as a minimum. I tried to learn aluminum with a diversion and hated it.

Re: .035 spray transfer spatter spatter smoke smoke

Maybe there is something wrong with that welder, because it won't spray at 25V. My ctwd could be too low but definitely not too high.

Looks like you can run a spoolgun off of a Bobcat, you just need another cheapish control box. https://www.millerwelds.com/support/sys ... okup-chart.

You didn't say what type of welder you have. Practice on some similar sized scrap.

Re: .035 spray transfer spatter spatter smoke smoke

So today I tried going back to 29.5V and decreasing the wire speed from there. Below about 375 I got pretty close to what I was after. The Lincoln parameters app says I should be able to spray at 25V and 390ipm, which is not even close.

.035 spray transfer spatter spatter smoke smoke

I run a few different mig setups at work, but I never did spray transfer until I started this job 3 months ago. Anyway running the big welder with .052 Fabcor edge at 29V I get a nice quiet little tapered jet of metal with hardly any spatter, but with the Millermatic 252 and .035 solid wire I cannot...

Re: Big gush of argon?

I usually tap the pedal to make sure I've got argon already in the cup when I start. If your worried about saving pennies on gas you can probably get a better deal with a bigger tank, but I don't think 25$ for an 80 is that bad. I pay about 25$ to get a 125 filled. The problem of arc dancing on an a...

Re: Government Contracts?

I finally did get the sdvosb certification. The bullshit never really ends though, and it looks like I'll need to file some more paperwork to view export controlled documents. Mostly it's just a pain to sort and navigate. Sometimes a solicitation says they need 100 brackets, and then it includes pdf...

You should have my job. I thought working in a machine shop would be great until the second week I got 7 pieces dropped off in my corner that were about 15 feet long 2 inch thick and 30 inches wide on bottom, 8" wide on the top. They said "add 3/16" in paint pen on each end of them. ...

Re: Amateur Weld Porn

Are you on DC-? Sorry for the obvious question, but three things make me wonder. First is the balling of the tungsten. Second is the required 160 amps. And third is how there is a sootie looking deposit in a band away from the weld. It almost looks like there is some cleaning action and then some s...

I think your going to make things worse by cutting and welding on it. Obviously your not going heat treat it again when your done. You said it's in alignment, so why does it need to be fixed?

I've only ever heard that it is weaker with aluminum. On steels it depends mostly on the type of joint.

Re: Amateur Weld Porn

Galvanizing or other coatings usually cause my welds to spontaneously pop and blow metal on my tungsten. If you dipped it your tungsten in aluminum previously and didn't get it all ground out it will cause issues as well.

I always check capacitors first on any electronics. If they are swollen or leaking they are bad.

I thought that getting a cage code and DLA account were going to be the difficult part, but no it's the SDVOSB rating that is getting ridiculous. I started this in early November and though it was supposed to take 60 days, but that is just how long they wait before looking at any of your paperwork. ...

I use Autodesk Fusion 360, which is free for hobbyists. I think it is fantastic, and would not trade it for Inventor, Solidworks, or Creo. My only complaint is that they still haven't added sheet metal functions.

Re: Any Reason to Have Both MIG and TIG?

Even though I consider myself a tig welder I think if anyone is going to only have one welder it should be mig. The reason the first welder that I bought was a tig welder is because my brother already had a mig welder and I knew I could borrow it whenever. If you sell the mig it should be to a frien...

I like 5554. It is what you should use for production, but from what I have been told it will take years or decades for the 5356 joint to fail from boiling temps.

I have found that just throwing them in the washer will not destroy them. They may shrink and stiffen a little bit, but it was a successful enough experiment that I now do it regularly.

We do the maintenance at a plant that grinds coal into powder and then leaks half of it out. The plant shut down for Christmas and th...

Re: the million dollar question !!!

Reduce arc length and torch angle. Use a thicker filler rod. When your not dabbing keep the filler tip far enough away from the arc that your not preheating it, but it should still be in the argon. Dab fast and be sure to connect the filler with the molten pool. Sliding the tip of the filler on the ...
