Re: 321 to mild on a turbo manifold

Ahhhhh yes, that's the missing link in my thinking - the heatsink. Thank you Arno, makes perfect sense now. My wastegate is on a takeoff from the turbine housing, fairly remote, and it's a big ole V60. They're not watercooled but it's in a good spot in terms of cooling https://i.imgur.com/O8mviev.pn...

Re: 321 to mild on a turbo manifold

Schedule 10 1.5 yeah so .1" wall. It's not so much about the amount of chrome but the Cb of 347 to stabilize the joint and prevent carbide precip (in my mind anyway).

Re: 321 to mild on a turbo manifold

Never heard of that and I don't doubt it works but I'm specifically after extreme temperature resiliency (hence using 321+347). Even Burns who makes pro manifolds says to use 309 on the header flange, and I'm sure it's fine as that joint isn't as critical as the tubing butt joints or the collector b...

321 to mild on a turbo manifold

Hey guys, I'm working on a new turbo manifold for my car and I'm doing the runners out of 321. Experienced turbo racers told me to use a mild head flange for expansion and to weld to it with 309. Burns seems to agree but I was wondering what you folks thought? I know 309 is meant to weld 300 to mild...

Get their $50 circular saw blade sharpener, chuck the tungsten in a drill, perfect grind at any angle in seconds.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Moving my wastegate straight to the turbine housing for real boost control, the WG is so huge (V60) that I didn't have a nice way to dump it so I decided to do a smokestack. Can't wait to hear how it sounds (in addition to the 4" Ti side exit exhaust I plan to do) r0nJRYI.jpg Also haven't done ...

Re: Sleeved pipe butt weld tips?

Turned out well! I still can't quite wrap my head around how much welds make metal move around. I know it does but I find it hard to "feel" like it's real. My friend machined it to such a press fit that he needed to use his mill table to assemble it. He adjusted it to a 0.002"ish runo...

Re: Sleeved pipe butt weld tips?

Others who know what they're talking about can answer that better but I wouldn't try that, feels like adding unevenly distributed welds can add stress risers and uneven tension. I want to make the joint as uniform all around as I can.

Re: Torch switch for a 14pin connection

I had a look at that eastwood part number and it's that paddle switch all the Chinese welders come with. I'm not a fan of these, my China plasma cutter came with one, I was always afraid of breaking it (and later saw videos of guys doing just that). The button is nicely positive without needing a lo...

Re: Sleeved pipe butt weld tips?

Sorry about the late reply guys, I was at PRI until yesterday and now laid up with the flu. I assume the sleeve also adds strength to the weld? Do you burn into the sleeve as well? Yeah that's my plan currently, to hit the sleeve with the autogenous "tacking" pass and then a cover to get t...

Re: Sleeved pipe butt weld tips?

This needs to have no wobble when fully welded? I feel like that is almost impossible, but im not that experienced. I like the idea of clamping angle iron and tacking it in a bunch of places. Not a ridiculous tolerance but as close to no wobble as reasonably possible. It's a driveshaft section. The...

Sleeved pipe butt weld tips?

In the near future, I will be joining two 2.5" 095 wall mild tubes with a machined inner sleeve. I've requested it to be a tight hammer/press fit. The end result needs to be as straight as possible. My plan right now is to fit it up straight, clamp some angle iron in each side, verifying that i...

Re: Purging - sealing/pressurizing?

Yeah I use PET tape for holding things together to tack but even then, especially with smaller parts where things are close together, I end up cooking it a bit. At least it comes off clean once it cools unlike other thinks like aluminum hvac tape.

Josh, do you not find that you cook the tape? I find unless I go only a little bit at a time and let things cool, I start charring ...

Purging - sealing/pressurizing?

Hey guys, I've been doing more stainless lately and I've been experimenting with different approaches to purging, as we all know each situation is pretty much a bespoke solution unless it's the same pipe every time. I know Argon is heavier than air and should build up and displace air bottom to top ...

Re: Coolmate 1.3 first welds

Thanks for this post - really helpful. I just fired up my coolmate 1.3 recently myself, and dont understand why the indicator light is not on when in use. have switched the setting to ON just so i could check if that was why, but no luck. Anyone else have this problem with the Coolmate 1.3? Thanks!...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Not my best welds but was still a fun project. Industrial side job came my way. 1/4” tube and angle, 1/2” base, pushing the limits of my 210DX, messing with the AC balance (decreased EP with a higher cleaning balance to keep the puddle clean but not fry the 1/8” tungsten) and using a low frequency h...

Re: tack welding thick and thin aluminum

Depending on the disparity of the thicknesses, I go beyond just biasing the heat and treat it mentally as not even joining two things but running a bead on the thick piece and the thin one is basically like more filler - I'm not running a puddle on it, only on the thick piece and the puddle is what ...
