In fab I'm a solids machinist. In spite of my elitism I have to say learning TIG has netted my company $30k with an outlay of about $4k.
But still my aluminum (inium) is functional, but nasty to look at...

I brazed it.I'm chicken shit. I'll try my deox copper filler rod on something less critical.

OK.
Silver solder. I'll join them with 1200 degree paste I happen to have access to. Functionally the part will never go above 600F so it should work.
I'll get the rosebud nozzle out and set about doing it.

Re: Copper welding advice needed
Thanks for the suggs. Yeah, the manifold is 1 inch square, 5 inch long. I want this welded to a 1 x 1 x 1 extension to the sprue bushing...nozzle. Welded to enhance heat flow as much as stiffness so the manifold doesn't get...bent... from the pressure the molding machine nozzle pressing on this whol...

Copper welding advice needed
Hey people! I'm making a new injection mold to reduce waste, landfill trips, etc. I'm doing the hard part last...as usual. It's a hot runner mold and the manifold is copper. I want good heat conduction to the copper channel from the manifold back to the sprue bushing and nozzle. Therefore I want to ...

Very interesting. Very interesting..
Fractionation of "slag" in zero g.
Whole bunch forces to consider.
Shielding? Arc control?
Wow for short.

I've made lots of beer. Weldin? Not so much, but you can weld copper with copper rod. Why not go there?

Re: Troubleshooting erratic shielding with CK9
Can magnetized workpieces or fixturing cause this? I've not heard much of this.cj737 wrote:This may sound obscure, but, by chance do you have a magnet nearby holding your work? That can really screw up your arc and can be “forgotten” or overlooked. It produces the same reactions you’re describing.

Re: Lay wire technique
I started by laying the wire and kicking pedal...got the same result. Now I start the puddle then scoot the wire in and lay it. I move the torch and work the amps with the base my main concern. The wire melts and joins the puddle. If I go too fast what you describe happens. The wire is easy to melt ...

Re: Price of stainless steel filler
I have maybe 30 lb. of 316 wire for a cancelled job. It's not filler, just wire. Do you think I could sell this? I've used it for filler with no issues. .070"diameter, 6 foot long pieces.

Re: HALP!! aluminum mold repair - 2024 alloy
I think it turned out well. Did an overnight run no prob. Before I got into welding I would have drilled a hole bigger than the damage, plugged it and recut the cavities. This all happened because the end user pulls parts off the runner and wants no nubby gate vestige. I made the gates just large en...

Re: HALP!! aluminum mold repair - 2024 alloy
Thanks for the kind words. I had success. I hand milled 2 divots near the damage. I set 35% clean with max amps at 60. 3/32 lanthanum and 1/16 4043. Took a deep breath and hit it hard on the away side of my divot. The sharp edge melted for a sec and I dabbed quickly then moved the arc to coax the ad...

Re: HALP!! aluminum mold repair - 2024 alloy
Thanks! I may have to try on some scrap. It's not really structural. It just has to fill space and stay put. Mcmaster Carr probably isn't the best source but says it's marginally doable.

HALP!! aluminum mold repair - 2024 alloy
OK. Tomorrow I have to repair a dent in a mold and sure could get some advice. It's 2024 aluminum, .75 inch thick, and the divot is a compression fault due to a bit of polyurethane getting squished with 33 tons of force. Both plastic and mold lost that war. Anyway it's a crater about .005 deep and ....

Re: One good thing about being a welder...eclipses!
I was taking pix with my big auto dark module. Learned something.
When I looked with live view on the camera there were horizontal dark bars. I learned that the visor does not have variable shades. It's blinks open and shut really fast and the control knob changes the ratio.
Fascinating.

One good thing about being a welder...eclipses!
I'm ready. Near Philly so no total for me. I will get some pics thru my helmet though. There's a large sunpot group on it. Twice the span of Jupiter but they're stretched out like the Aleutian islands.

Re: Foot pedal w/ Everlast 160STH
So that bobbing between 11 and 12 makes sense now. It's the AD circuit parsing the pot position. I'm intrigued. If you floor the pedal does it indicate the max amps? I know they pissed you off but I could live with that. Maybe. Mine goes down to 5 amps and that's what I need sometimes for small stuf...

Re: Foot pedal w/ Everlast 160STH
The only stake I have in Everlast is my unit with 1 year and no probs. Quite disconcerting. I guess your unit didn't come with a pedal? 160 is a lot for 2 stampings, a spring, a pot, switch and a cord. The strain relief on mine came loose so I know how to open it up....it's just pried open, not scre...

Re: Foot pedal w/ Everlast 160STH
If he's saying the readout only indicates the amperage when the pedal is not plugged in, that's lame. Id probably send it back too. But if it's goofy when the pedal is pressed only, I for one can't tell you what it reads while I'm welding. I'm watching the puddle. In that case I'd keep it. Monday I'...

DTM, let us know if the return goes smoothly.
I have a 164si and been lucky I guess. Just curious, when you're welding it bounces from 11 to 12, but when you release pedal completely it reads correct?

Thanks. I learned something today.
Being a noob I would have said that is stainless tube and the weld looks like the backside, unshielded stainless weld. When I think anodized I picture that dull finish.
Par for me.
