There is a great post I have ever read. Thank to sharing this type of post. Its inspire parents very much. Re: Outrigger pads damaged

I don't want to be a soggy mop but I have ran into these repairs before and you better make sure your welder is qualified. I can't remember the specifics but when that crane is recertified they WILL ask to see the paperwork for that repair before they sign off. We ran into this at a place I used to ...

Re: Different Certifications

So theoretically a person could start out leaving school with say 2 certs 1 for stick welding and 1 for tig. They may spend the next 30 years making tig welds and never touch a stick rod ever again but they will still be certified in stick welding. Not true. AWS and ASME both require you to weld wi...

Re: Suggest new Forum Software Update

I'll throw my 2 cents in and leave it be. I like what we have and wouldn't want to see it change except for what is needed and those changes should be slow. There is so much info on here is would be terrible to loose the knowledge stored here. I often search here for info I have put here as well as ...

Re: Tig - What should I buy?

There were posts reported here and I see nothing that demands action. There are valid points here. To the OP, I understand where you are coming from by wanting to learn a skill that you can use for yourself and I respect the desire for quality, especially for the type of work. However, I would highl...

Re: First 7018 beads

Welcome to the forum!

I agree, I wouldn't whip 7018 in the flat position. Try higher amperage if for nothing else to see the difference. I would drag that rod as smoothly as you can and practice away. It's looking good though.

Re: AED?

The only negative potential I see with a Safety section is offering legal advice so to speak in the form of opinion. I would like to see posts of this happened to me, watch for this or that, and if questions arose only OSHA law, or local law, is cited so no one gets in trouble. That aside, safety is...

Re: Penatration question

Steve,
No I was just throwing an amperage number out to be generic. The 3/16" electrode would be much higher for sure.

I guess I should have asked if we are compairing amperage being the same for both electrodes or general penetration available for the two given rod sizes.

Re: Penatration question

Great question and welcome to the forum! So we get into welding theory here, which I enjoy quite a lot. Let's assume that both are running at 120 amps. The 1/8" electrode would penetrate quite well and let's also assume that is on the high end of its sweet spot. Now let's assume at 120 amps wit...

Live weld test training on Periscope

I have been kicking around the idea of doing weld test training as well as genreal welding/fabrication answering live on the Periscope app. For those not fimiliar, Periscope is a app you download on your phone and once your profile is created you can broadcast whatever it is you want to share live t...

Re: AED?

Steve, We do not but have talked about getting one for a while. We "technically" are not required by OSHA to have one as we are under 10 employees but $1500 is well worth it when you can save someone's life. I am glad you have a AED and apparently and I assume received the required trainin...

Re: New to welding, looking for mentor in Austin, TX area

Welcome to the forum! I have to agree with the others. I would advise you save your pennies and when the right deal come along jump on it. Having a personal machine will add so much more training than just relying on others or a school. You can take what you learned that day and practice a little th...

Re: Choices! 2015 Millermatic 211 Transformer or 2016 invert

Well since none of the others directly answered your question :o ;) I highly recommend you test both the 2015 and the 2016 if you can. The only thing I can think of that would be much different is the arc characteristics between inverter and transformer, besides the argument of which will last longe...

Re: Lincoln TIG 200 wait or Bail??

This is just my personal opinion but I would wait for the Lincoln. I have tested them quite a bit and they are great machines for the money. Not saying any other machine mentioned is bad whatsoever I just prefer "name brand" machines when I have a choice and am buying new.

Welcome to the forum! I would recommend 15 cfh to start off and adjust to yout liking from there. You might be able to get away with 10 cfh if you don't have any drafts in your work area to save on gas consumption while practicing. I'm not sure what your mean by foot pedal position though.

Sorry, I should have said general repair out of the garage. I just wanted to keep this a simple tool list and not necessarily the business plan side. That is a huge topic all its own for sure and absolutely needs to be thought out before one starts their business.

I want to start a welding business

Like most of you I'm sure, I get asked quite often how to go about starting a welding business out of the garage and that question always leads to what machines and equipment should I buy. It has come up here quite often, and will keep coming up forever. But I got a email from a guy asking the same ...

Re: how to approach suppliers regarding work quality

It boils down to picking your battles as well. Some parts that are a few mm off may not be a big deal while others it is. On parts that matter they should make it right especially if you gave them a tolerance to hold. I get almost everything processed for me and the company I work for and I know the...
