Some of my junk

My wife likes fall colors. So I went to the shop awhile back and made her a maple branch in fall colors. Textured the main branch under the power hammer, cut the leaves out, attached stems, welded to branch, colored and clear powder coated. Her liked it :) I cut the angels in the heart on the plasma...

Tales from the test booth

New boiler starting up and I was the first welder to test for the job. Foreman told me "You ain't gonna believe this weld tech these idiots hired". Got paper work done and this really cute and trim little blond comes out and hands me a couple of coupons for the tube test and then goes back...

Re: Taking the test

Never seen coupons for a bend test cut with anything but an oxy/acet torch or in later years a plasma cutter. I have cut literally hundreds if not thousands of straps with a torch. Now here is where we get serious - when cutting straps I cut them then threw them in a bucket of water to cool them of...

Redwing slip on Pecos boots. Wore out more of these than I can count. Had a boss going to step on my toe one day to "test" and see if they were steel toed or not. Told him that was when the fight was going to start! Never had a pair of steel toed boots that were comfortable.

Re: Having fun in the boiler

Most boiler inspectors (Hartford especially) really frown on window welds. The only window welds we ever put in were on some radiant reheat tubes that had zero clearance to water wall tubes on one side. Combustion boiler design. Hated working on those damn radiant tubes.

Taking the test - part 2

I gave many, many test's to welders in preparation for boiler repair jobs down thru the years. I have seen funny things happen in the test booths as a result. I have walked in and found folks that had taken down the coupon and were rolling it on the table for the root pass - and another one gone. I ...

Having fun in the boiler

Two boilermakers buddy welding a reheat tube. Note how tight the space is. This is the cap so they have a TIG root in, filled and capped w/ 8018 or 9018. Reheats can have 3-4 metal combinations according to the place in the row and elevation. These are some of the easier tubes to weld in a boiler. T...

Well I might as well give you the bad news. You ain't gonna be a pipeline welder is six week pal. If you are not already a skilled welder then yes go to a good welding school/class and that will teach you the basics. Then find a job somewhere that will let you get some practical welding experience. ...
