Interesting job and nice work overall. I had no idea what those tanks were made up of.

I have no idea where I got that from. I mean, we are also fabricators, so it is probably just some weird mental block on my part. I am from Tampa. Been here most of my life.

Re: Pimp My Golf Cart

I'm amazed how little stick-out you have on that tungsten. I like a good 3/8"- 1/2" for aluminum. I usually use a gas lens, though. I also have unlimited access to helium at work, which spoils the hell out of me for heavier sections. I must have dropped it because I typically don't let th...

Re: Tamjeff

Well thank you. I have been the only weldor in our shop for over 5 years now so I never get to talk to other weldors anymore. Before I knew it, years went by. It seems as if nobody is getting into the industrial arts anymore. Kids come into the shop looking for a job with no shoelaces and their pant...

Re: TIG Welding Aluminum on DC

I used DC to build an aluminum T-handle for one of my offshore fishing reels. I used DC because I only had 2% and pure tungsten on hand and wanted to use a sharpened electrode for tiny welds. It was more like tacks on tacks than a full on weld being as I pulsed it but it came out quite nice and held...

Welding reverse travel helps when using just purge plates.

Re: Anyone For Cast Aluminum?

Nice work! I enjoy welding Al, and don't do it nearly enough at my current job. When I do, it's usually the pressure-building coil you see underneath an argon or nitrogen trailer, exposed to all kinds of abuse, sand, rocks, "road kill", road salt, and other de-icing chemicals. It's essent...

Re: Pimp My Golf Cart

It's a Miller on/off switch. This one happens to be at least 15 yrs old and has been used every working day since I got it. It's encased in rubber. This particular one is a hair trigger. Some you get are rather stiff. I used to use the little roller micro switches from places like radio shack and th...

Re: Tubing roller and bender stand

Nice. Many people might be surprised how bending tools and equipment can open a lot of doors in fabrication work. I started out with an ancient manual Hossfeld bender that someone stored forever at a place I worked at and I have been bending/welding pipe ever since as a day job.

A note concerning oak for dies. I have used it before but it was white oak and was made up of a laminate of 1/4" layers with the grain reversed like plywood is or heart wood. I have a chunk of white oak heart wood that I got from a pallet that is about 3"x2"x16" that I have been ...

It also helps sometimes to close things in towards the center like this dogleg weld on the edge. Watching what the gap does as you weld, sometimes even even drilling past the crack to move or close a joint in on itself. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/6830_1163200074299_4198164_n.jpg The...

Anyone For Cast Aluminum?

It's something I have to weld quite often. I have a pretty good method, especially when there is a likelihood of salt inclusion. I essentially tin the contaminated metal and groove it as I go. This also helps with minimizing shrinkage and warpage as well. There's also a strategy involved that uses c...

I'm new to the forum. As we all know, there isn't a whole lot of people about that care as much about welding as we do, which is why I am here. It's just too much holding all of this in all the time. Anyway, here is a project some may like. It was one of those design as you go things based around a ...
