PITA Cast Iron Repair

20170528_143046.jpg 20170528_082250.jpg[attachment=0]20170528_084143.jpg This was without a doubt the worst cast repair I ever have done. As the pics show, this exhaust manifold had a pretty significant crack. I was able to make homemade dye and find the ends of the cracks...then the fun began. Thi...

Re: Emergency Dye Penetrant

What material is the manifold ? boats use all sorts - easiest way to follow end of crack is give the visible bit a good heat with an acetylene torch & follow it along - the edges will be quite visible & likely move slightly - at the end obviously it won't - if it won't tolerate the heat fro...

Re: 6063-T7 aluminum

Instead of cutting out a piece, would it be possible to weld in a correctly shaped piece that restores the original box section size of the frame. I'm not sure what the original frame looks like, so can't tell if the frame is just pushed in, or if it's also been increased in size vertically. Are yo...

Hey stefuel...welcome to the forum. If you could send in a pic it would be a big help. Normally I turn down critical repairs but your frame job doesn't sound critical so let's see. IMO you could get away without pulse but don't take my word for it. Let's see what you got....you'll get plenty of inp...

THANK YOU!! I don't really want to put kerosene on this crack but I have to grind it and prep and clean it anyway so I am guessing it will be ok. Thanks Artie!

I don't have any dye penetrant to find the ends of the cracks so I can drill them out. Any suggestions? I plan on doing a pictorial on this repair to upload but I really need som...

Re: Heat Paste

Wow...I guess it is too late. Must be spring fever  Here's my question-what is this heat paste? Does it reduce heat input or what? It absorbs heat...kinda like a chunk of AL or copper. Nice to have if your welding near something that can be ruined by heat like a grommet or packing gland etc......

No. But you might want to touch it up before you switch metals. Grind off the little ball if you were on AC...heck sometimes I forget and weld on DC with a balled tungsten. It's all good.
