Re: sheetmetal certification?

sheet metal workers weld ducting and all sorts of sheet metal but they also weld the supports that hold the ducts so it could be a sheet metal test , a thick plate test, or both and it you will probably be required to take different tests for every different job you work that requires certification....

Re: Noobie needs help

a rule of thumb for amperage settings is 1 amp for every thousandth of thickness up to a max of about 250. this is just a ball part figure and there are lots of exeptions, but this rule will get you in the ball park. using carbon steel as a benchmark, stainless needs less amps, aluminum needs more. ...

sticking with a tig torch is not something you would want to do routinely but here is an example of how it could come in handy... lets say you are on a job site welding 2 inch stainless pipe and you need to weld a small piece of angle iron for a temporary support and you are up on a scaffold... you ...

if you need portablity, then you will be glad you got it. If you dont need portability, I like your idea of buying the exact machine you are familiar with.

Re: MIG Welding versus MIG Braze Welding

mig brazing seems to be the equivalent to tig brazing using silicon bronze (sil-bro) filler metal. Usually silicon bronze wire is used which melts at a lower melting point than steel. inevitably, some melting of the steel happens. ...just like when you tig steel with sil-bro. if you are careful, you...

Re: Dynasty 300DX Set Up

a good starting point would be around 100hz for frequency, balance set to about 65, and amperage on around 150 and adjust with foot control, torch gas no more than 15 cfh with a #7 cup, if you can get some 50/50 or even 80/20 helium / argon mix, that will make a big difference but its not absolutele...

Re: Welding stainless tube

@ 55 amps, it sounds like a smaller electrode and a smaller filler might help. keep a tight arc, dont fart around, get in , get out. building your amps really slowly will only let heat build up too much. you need to light up, get a puddle, add some rod, and start moving all within about 3 seconds. g...

Re: DC ivertor TIG autobody panels

Ben, get some straight argon for your tig welding. the ar/c02 mix is only for mig and sounds like your main problem.
10 amps should be plenty low enough to weld without holes on 20 ga.

thanks,

Re: Welding pot metal aluminum

I use alladin 3 in 1 zinc aluminum brazing rod for tig welding pot metal. Unless its really thick , a 1/16 or 3/32 electrode is enough. I use 2%thor. I taper it and let it ball however it wants to. When it starts to flow good, I get off of it and let it cool for a minute. I have found with pot metal...

Are you feathering both ends of each tack with a grinder? That is the key for me. Then when you tie in you actually keyhole well into the tack before it closes up and things look slick on the inside. when you light up on a tack after you feather grind it, start back on the unground part and ease int...

309 is the most commonly used filler for welding carbon to stainless. and is good to have on hand when porosity rares its head on carbon steel.
for some non critical apps, 308 will work....but I would use 309
