Re: Want opinions, thinking of buying this welder..
May I assume a standard wall lamp still has two wires, therefore is single phase. Here, some residential structures are multi family, they have three phase, but no three phase loads. It is just a way to bring 1.73 times as much power without big services. Is your welder three phase? Here we have 15 ...

Re: Want opinions, thinking of buying this welder..
I've never been down under. I can promise that physics are the same there, and here. A welder needs a dedicated circuit. A dedicated circuit goes without interruption from breaker panel to welder. Installers putting a circuit in place for lighting, or code minimum are allowed to take shortcuts. A we...

Could you persuade McDonalds to leave the fries in the fryer a few minutes longer? The whole world prefers a crisp fry.

Re: Dual shield flux core?
I melted my M25 Weldcraft gun that came with my Millermatic 252. I now use a 400 amp Bernard gun for Dual Shield. Yes it is fast. I'm not convinced it is faster than MIG, but I feel fusion is better assured. It is prone to worm holes. I believe gas coverage issues, or linger stick out makes coverage...

Go for it! Start with a good helmet, gloves, and 1/16, or thicker cleaned steel. With no filler, but 15 CFH argon, make horizontal rivers of liquid steel. Tomorrow, you will add basic filler. I buy steel filler so seldom I have to check the designation each time 70S...... I used RG45 for many years ...

Re: Tig socket, what is this??
It is a totally different process in Australia. Australian gravity being reversed, it is necessary to use helium to prevent TIG weld from floating away before it freezes. Argon being neutrally buoyant, is no help when molten filler is trying to float up out of the weld joint. As everything in Austra...

Re: New Aluminium Welder Woes
Dipping tungsten in aluminum can contaminate well up the shaft, all the way to the gas lense. I've heard you should break the tungsten, and regrind. That seems wasteful. In my dip very frequently days I started grinding well up the shaft of the tungsten. I have a dedicated bench grinder laid on its ...

Correct me as needed. I have the sense that I can sand, grind, power brush steel because A. it is less sensitive to contaminants than aluminum, and B. it has less tendency to gall. The heat of friction tends to soften alum, and contamination is wiped in. The goal is to minimize heat input. Hand brus...

It's true. But sometimes metal is so heavily oxidized, a hand brush won't remove it. I have had some success with a power stainless brush, use only if it'll take all day by hand.

Re: Millermatic 250x
Think fire hose. More pressure is more voltage. MIG machines modulate to keep voltage constant. Wire speed controls amperage. Within the range of fine tuning more wire speed makes more heat. Use a chart to begin voltage, and wire feed rate, then tweak a bit to control. If you feel wire stubbing, tur...

Re: Millermatic 250x
I'm in love with 252. I was made to believe the digital readouts were what separated the machines. I always begin with the door chart, then tweak from there. I'll warn you that as I learned from another welder, the needle sometimes is wrong.

That is a tough question to answer. They are a better quality, but Home Depot has a similar product at less than half the cost. If I'm very careful with the norton, it lasts more than twice as long, and leaves a cleaner finish. Approach a corner at the wrong angle, it ruins a disc. I'd rather lose a...

Aluminum is like the 60'S song "Age Of Aquarius" If it is right, you are happy. If it is wrong, you may have more than one issue to fix. The first red flag for me is no foot pedal. Immagine your car or truck without one. "I want to learn with fewer controls, so I won't use the acceler...

I have 1/16 tungsten "cause it is cheap. I can buy NOS from the internet cheap. It'll work fine if you don't go big. On the other hand, steel works very nice with a sharp 3/32. Due to the melt back, I still like 1/16 for very thin aluminum sheet.

TIG welders should be divided into steel, and aluminum That's a simple and clear understanding, of course, it's never mentioned. The duty cycle is 35%, but they don't say at what power. ?? Moving faster, with more amps is the road to low heat input, outrun the conduction of heat. It is my belief that not using filler allows more time in transition between freeze, and strength. Add 1 LB of 32 degree water to a pitcher of 70 degree water. it cools it 38 BTU. Add 1LB of 32 degree ice to ...
